Ya… Notre Dame is pretty much guaranteed an NY6 bowl. He couldn’t wait until after that? Kinda hope they win one without him

It’s not that weird, a lot of them just were not good coaches so they were fired

LSU couldn’t wait until after that, probably. They were already taking a lot of heat with jimbo being a nonstarter, seeing a rival pluck a coach in their own backyard and then seeing their top choice bolt for the west coast. People were clamoring for LSU to fill the position - another month of that would be crazy for them to deal with.

    Great Googly Moogly Supporter

And obviously this has got to end any argument or angst against kids transferring. This is top level dick move.

Honestly I was gonna rant earlier today about how the bowl system is awful, mostly cause coaches always leave before them. In these bowl games, coaches don't care, they're meaningles, fans barely care, a lot of players sit out, and it costs small programs money. So why do we have them.

But it always bothered me how these coaches abandon their teams before the season is over but Kelly leaving even before their national title hopes is appaling. For Lsu??

I used to love Brian Kelly for what he was doing at the D2 level but he is a fucking maniac. I couldn't fathom playing for that dude

Don't recreate the scene, or reinvent the meanings Supporter

I know covering college football in a former life you can probably appreciate some of this to an extent.

I think there a few layers here. Kelly has always been about improving his own standing and I don’t mean it in an all bad sense. Most people working try to do the same. You look at his jumps before, especially how he left Cincy and flirting with other jobs at ND most recently, that really show that. When Kelly took over at ND, the admin was quite frankly cheaper than it is now and Kelly did a lot of re-negotiating every few years. He did this for himself, the staff, and for upgrades. Kelly was a lot of things, but he was loyal to his staff. Almost to a fault with hires like Van Gorder and such.

From what I’ve been told, Jack Swarbrick and ND cut that rope off on the last deal and upgrades, and Kelly was facing three years to improve the program from where it currently sits. Kelly wanted more improvements for certain things that likely wouldn’t be done any time soon. He was running out of leverage.

Kelly’s agent went out and found him 10 years and $95M plus bonuses at a school in a recruiting hotbed with tons of additional resources, in the best conference with the best tv deal, and a school that won a title recently. There are certainly some downsides that we can all rattle off and talk about overall fit, and that’s all probably fair. But ultimately, I think it was a business decision that also offers him a new challenge. I think as much as he liked ND there was a part of him that felt like he re-established ND and feels like it will remain in a good place moving forward.

    Sorry for the long post.

    The rivalry is back on

i dont have any anger or angst towards kids transferring, but similarly think coaching interview windows could be better regulated to prevent things like this happening until after the postseason. (although I think it’s “technically” tampering to talk to a current coach during the regular season and they have that at a bare minimum and loosely enforced level)

although the thing that sucks about college football is that someone loses regardless when a coach leaves. Do it too early and the current players are holding the bag, and if you do it too late, the recruits banking on playing for a specific HC are holding the bag without much time to find a backup plan (especially with early singing day being a thing)
