Hm. I guess other media markets aren't that different either. I mean, in the gaming industry, indie studios are being bought up by larger publishers all the time, for better or worse. Usually worse, if I'm honest.

I mean, I get it. As much as I would like to just enjoy things, and I do, but I do also understand there is an underlying structural problem with every industry, not just cinema. I want to have it both ways, where we can just enjoy what we like and everyone gets to make what they like too.

Basically I want a utopia. But we'll probably all be dead before long anyway, so maybe it doesn't matter.

 

Yeah, I know, it's not good. In a perfect world, there would be a mainstream company with an indie mindset that would put money toward all kinds of things without concern about audience numbers and profit. Unfortunately, that company would probably quickly go out of business.

 

Enjoy what you like, nothing I say is intended to dampen anyone’s love or enthusiasm for whatever they like. I just think it’s important to be aware and critical of practices and companies that are detracting from the art form I love. I used to see every MCU movie the night they came out, I’m not trying to separate my critiques from my taste (though I do feel like the MCU has really collapsed under its own weight in the last 5 years)

 

i would prefer creators purchasing theaters over streaming companies doing that, like tarantino with new beverly, and keeping them in independent theater with their dollars from major studios. maybe chloe will do that.

 

i know when the arclight dome closed their was discussion of netflix, amazon, or even AMC purchasing it. nothing would be more disappointing and opposed to how the arc light operated as a theater.

 

I thought this was kinda a mess, and at times a slog, but in a weird way I almost enjoyed it more than I would another “very competent Marvel movie that hits all the right Marvel movie beats and nothing more.”

It felt super all over the place — like the actors and characters weren’t even really on the same page about what kind of movie they were in. I thought Barry Keoghan was easily the best part of the movie and his little side-romance with Lauren Ridloff was ten times more charming and compelling than the relationships that got way more screen time.

Anyway I didn’t think this really worked but I definitely didn’t leave thinking “that sucked”. The mess of it all was a flaw I almost welcomed after years of Marvel movies being such a well-oiled machine.

 

I would also LOVE to see Zhao handle Silver Surfer if he appears in an Eternals film...


ETERNALS Writer Says The "Door Is Very Much Open" For A Potential Sequel To Introduce Galactus

 

Using this movie to introduce the concept of Celestials growing inside of planets was definitely not an accident, they're 100% beginning to set up Galactus

 

It actually occurred to me, what if they made Galactus a Celestial? Like, it fits.

 

I think that'd depend on how wide a net they want to cast and how much lore they want to deal with for the cosmic side of the MCU

this was great. I really liked this. Brian Tyree Henry ran away with it and I'm not surprised in the least

most of Kumail's line deliveries fell pretty flat though, at least in the crowd I was watching with. the way he just sat out the big final act fight was pretty telling, wish we could have seen more of Makkari and Thena instead of him

 

Isn’t Sprite’s arc basically that she hasn’t and wants to?

 

I really enjoyed this and even a few hours after seeing it I am still baffled by the negative reception it has received. I feel it did a remarkable job of bringing so many characters to the screen and telling its own story without the advantage of said characters being set up in prior efforts all the while getting me excited for what else is to come.

 

Eternals’ Hiroshima scene was personal for the writers, and Chloe Zhao fought to keep it

I found this interesting about the Hiroshima scene. Apparently even though it was around from the first draft, Zhao and the writers had to fight to keep it in the movie.

 

It was a powerful moment, it's good they kept it in. Didn't realize it was so personal to one of the writers given their Japanese heritage.

 

one of the worst scenes, not just of this, but any MCU film. absolutely baffling, to be charitable, decision.
