The 90s cartoon was very much a product of its time. I loved it growing up because it was my first exposure to so much of that universe and they did it in a way that didn't shy away from some hard topics. I mean, they killed Morph in the first episode. That's hardcore to a kid.

That said, they definitely haven't aged well in the writing or animation department, which is why I said what I did in my earlier post. I like a quote from the guys who did Voltron Legendary Defender about how they didn't want to adapt Voltron so much as the "Voltron they remembered".

That's what I hope for here. Recapture the spirit of the cartoon but, y'know, make it good.

I was hoping xmen would be a real reboot of the series, not a cartoon series but that’s cool too

Moon Knight, She Hulk, and Ms. Marvel snippets are on r/marvelstudios for anyone that doesn't have Disney+.

Leonardo Romero is a fantastic comic artist who’s worked on Kelly Thompson’s Hawkeye and Gerard Way’s Killjoys. The Spidey show having his character designs is incredibly promising. Now all I need is a confirmation that Uncle Ben’s in this.

The more I think about it, the more I think Freshman Year could retroactively save MCU Spidey for me. (Well, ok, some parts of especially Far From Home are just poorly executed and will always stick out to me, lol, but the character’s arc could finally be anchored in something resembling the Peter Parker I’ve loved for most of my life.)

My take has always been that Homecoming & FFH should've talked about Uncle Ben without showing him die or the spider bite, etc., but too late for that. However, if Freshman Year is a decompressed, modernized origin tale, like a better version of Ultimate Spider-Man’s first arc, it could recontextualize everything. You could get Pete having a relationship with a lovable working class Ben Parker, which both origin films nailed, but expanded more than it’s been before. And, since the die is cast with the Tony of it all, you can make young Pete a big Stark fan and have a supportive but out of his element Ben supporting him in that. Which, would then make the Iron Man of it all something rooted in Pete’s memories of his uncle that he failed.

Often when I let myself write something in my head before it happens I’m disappointed by the end result, lol, but I’ve been repeatedly disappointed by MCU Spidey regardless! So, hey, at least this has made me actually invested in a Disney+ thing for once!

The money they lost with Shang-Chi?

It made 430 million during a pandemic.

I sincerely doubt Marvel/Disney has any skepticism towards the future box office of Shang-Chi.

Would've been so easy to just cast an Asian actor as Danny Rand. The character doesn't HAVE to be white in order for them to set up the whole outsider narrative. A spoiled rich American would still be an outsider to K'un-Lun whether he was white or not. Was just such a stupid forced error, especially since Finn Jones isn't even a good actor.

No future Shang-Chi film will open in China because the CCP is upset that Simu was being honest about how his grandparents were raised. Same goes for any Eternal sequel that Zhao directs.

But, still, 430 million for the first film of a new character during a pandemic is great. I don't see two martial artists getting their own set of films. If Iron Fist is introduced he will be a side-character in a Shang-Chi sequel (no China release) or get his own D+ show (which doesn't stream in China).

This is another topic where I want to be careful with my words.

I liked Iron Fist. I'm not going to deny that it had flaws, but it also had quite a bit I enjoyed and I was really looking forward to seeing where a future season could've gone.

I fully understand people's concerns about Danny Rand, and if they had chosen to change his origin and make him different, I totally would've understood and given it a proper shake no matter what.

But as a comics fan, and a fan of the character, I'm glad they chose to keep things relatively comics accurate. This is from the perspective of someone who likes seeing the things he enjoyed brought to life, and also as a person who believes that stereotypes can be deconstructed and given nuance. Not saying that happened here, but anyway...

EDIT: To add onto my post, I do think it would be awesome if Iron Fist were to show up in a future Shang-Chi project down the road, just because it would present a perfect opportunity to deconstruct the character.

When they were gearing up for the Netflix show, I wanted them to cast someone of Asian descent as Danny Rand, and I’d still be cool with that. But, with how the whole synergistic Marvel machine works, and how the Iron Fist exists in the comics, I think it’s a significantly smarter choice in this case to make a new character.

The best situation depends from franchise to franchise. If they were to, say, cast a non-white actor as Reed Richards, that’d make some sense to me. On the other hand, a non-white Professor X (when the white academic hubris is kinda part of his character), instead of giving Storm the team leader push she deserves, would be really dumb. For Iron Fist, it’s already a legacy mantle canonically, so it works organically, in an additive and not cynical kinda way; plus, that would create all sorts of story options in the comics for Danny Rand as a different kind of character.

While the overall point is valid, not sure calling out Marvel for CGI-ing a tranquilizer gun is really a good example to use to make that point given recent history.

You know, when people were pointing out how Chloe Zhao used location sets for Eternals, I now kind of feel like I should have examined that statement a bit more and why that was a big deal.

CGIing a bar and a hotel room is pretty fucking wild. It's even wilder that I never knew.

EDIT: But yeah, that is pretty bullshit if it's all to avoid using unions.

Yeah, that's the first I've seen anything like the hotel and bar CGI. It honestly pisses me off that they'd be doing this to get around unions. What would it take for these vfx houses to unionize?

Rewatching Daredevil on Netflix, I’m curious how they’re gonna to handle that version of the character in the MCU considering how R-rated that show was.

The only movie gun options aren't "CGI" and "operational," though. Good physical props that don't fire anything are an incredibly easy option.

Also, if the union side is indeed a big part of it (which I believe quite easily, since this is a subsidiary of Disney, though I'm sure a general lack of care could also play a part), then this is actually a related issue to that tragedy, just with far less horrific results. Both are cases of cutting corners instead of respecting the people who make movies possible.

Again, the point re: unions and cutting corners is a valid and important one to make, but CGI guns are not exactly the best example to use in order to make it. Sure there are many safe alternatives to real working guns on set but CGI is undoubtedly one of those valid options. People shouldn’t be feeding into a negative connotation to the use of CGI guns in movies, regardless of the reason for it being used in this particular situation.

Until the Union problems in CGI are solved, they aren’t a valid solution to what even student films avoid with guns that just don’t fire. Disney has no excuse.
