    I was gonna try to hit 2,021 for the year. Started out strong and then March hit. My mental health took a hit due to work and caused my motivation for running to drop until my situation changed.

    But having to run at 1:30-2:30 in the afternoon in Southern California doesn’t make for the best conditions. Currently at 970 on Strava.

    Well, I have 1321 miles so far. My highest year yet since doing my first run in 2016. You guys are rocking it.

    I also completed the Pinhoti 100 Mile Endurance Run last weekend. Absolutely the hardest thing I've ever done. It's been on my bucket list since 2018 I would say. I have so much to say about this effort. I had envisioned a quicker time for myself in the turn of 26-28 hours. But it ended up being 29:13. I'm not mad it that at all. Absolutely an unrelenting course with tight cut offs. My legs were fatigued to the 100th degree in the back half of the effort so there was a lot of purposeful hiking. I was able to run a fair amount from miles 85-95, but doing so toasted the legs to where there was no coming back so I had to walk in the last 4 miles(as did many others). As you can see in the pics I was exhausted. I had to be picked up in a chair and carried over 20 feet to my car since I couldn't move. Used my moms old walker to get into my house. No exaggeration. It was rough lol. I laid around and loosened up quickly, and by Tuesday I was on my feet all day at work looking like nothing had happened. Body is still feeling it. Absolutely no running for at least 2 weeks. Need time to heal. Then, its back on the horse for some races I already have lined up next year. I'll give the Pinhoti another shot possibly next year as well. Gotta improve that time.

    What is your pre and post run stretching routine? Did you do a cooldown jog afterwards?

    Beyond those factors there could be things like hydration level or your general hip alignment. It’s easy when pushing on a run to favor one side (either knowingly or unknowingly) and that compounding stress can have repercussions such as being tight. If you aren’t very flexible and have essentially weaker hips, you’ll be more prone to tightness and pre and post stretching would be more critical. There is a cool product call the stick that is nice for using once you are tight. The other stuff would be more prevention tools.

    Running my first (and probably last) marathon tomorrow. At what point do you quit feeling like you're gonna fail? When you finish? Haha. Thinking of signing up for the 4:30 pace group knowing my best case scenario is a 4:14-4:24 range based on current training.

    However, I have learned that the half marathon is a lovely distance and my body is much more suited for that level of running, so I may try to make one of those an annual thing.

    I ran a 4:48:48. Not what I wanted (really wanted a sub-4:30, and only lost that at mile 22), but I finished. My first 13.1 was like 1:59:59, so that’s a big proud moment for me. I had an absolute blast running the first half. Course did me (and a lot of others) pretty dirty in the 17-23 range.

    congrats! No matter the time, you did it and you finished and that’s all that matters and, at least to me, one of the coolest things to realize after running a marathon is knowing that there are millions who will never know or go through what you did mentally and physically.

    I personally don’t even like driving 26 miles to get somewhere so when I finished my first marathon it was a surreal experience for numerous reasons.

    hopefully you enjoyed a good drink and/or meal afterwards! And rest up! And in a week or so maybe you’ll feel like going out for a light jog and even if you never do another race again, it’s a moment that you’ll always have!

    I’m having a hard time even mentally processing what happened/that I did it, still. After so much training it’s just… done?

    I had a way too expensive steak dinner to celebrate and was passed out by 8:30 haha. I’m giving myself an entire week off from everything. I’m really sore, but not tight/in pain.

    Oh just you wait until you climb a set of stairs in the morning.
    Congrats @Garrett that first marathon is one of the best feelings in the world. I love/hate the distance. The accomplishment is what I always try to remember when training.

    I saw this post and then completely forgot to respond.

    Yeah i usually stretch for at least 10 minutes before on the yoga mat doing a bunch of hip/leg openers, as well as some back stretches, before doing some active stretching right before running for the abductors/hamstrings/quads. Lately i've been doing a similar post-run stretch routine, but hadn't known about a cool-down jog until your post. Did one today after going 5 miles and already i feel better. I also got one of those no-grip water bottles someone rec'd me earlier and i think that is helping with hydration too.

    Also I bought some Brooks thermal tights and hoodie and they are game changing running in the cold. So damn flexible and warm compared to like Under Armor Cold Gear tights.

    I miss the days when I didn’t have to or even really think about stretching before a run lol. Oh the joys of getting older. I would do a few warm up stretches but nothing more than 2-3 minutes and now I’m doing a full body thing for 10+ minutes with heavy focus on my hips even when I just go out for two miles. Oh well, worth it in the end but my god just two years ago it would be right out of bed and careening down the roads.

    i haven't ran in anything other than altras for the past 8 years or so. i caught a sale on some saucony's endorphin pros and holy shit that carbon plate is a running cheat code.

    Signed up for the SF marathon (July 2022). Hoping third time is the charm since it was originally postponed in 2020 and then cancelled and I think cancelled last year as well lol.

    wildly enough, might be running it with my brother in law which would be awesome to do. He says he’s all for it but we’ll see. Either way, hopefully in 2022 I finally get to run over that goddamn Golden Gate Bridge!

    Signed up for my first race of 2022. A goal was to travel out of state for one, so I’m going to run the Indy Mini-Marathon in May with a friend from Ohio and a friend from Michigan and I’ll be coming in from Chicago.

    I ran outside today for 3 miles in 20 degree temps and 25 mph wind to remind myself already of appreciating weather that is very much not like today lol.

    I have a NordicTrack treadmill but have to keep it at my parents house as being on a 2nd floor apartment was immediately not possible to use it in so the winter months are always rough in Wisconsin to run. On one hand I don’t feel like melted death after a mile like I do in summer but goddamn it’s winter in Wisconsin which is not running weather (or weather for anything outside)

    I have never once had bleeding or chaffed nipples. Thank goodness.

    Luckily Winter in Alabama.... is winter in Alabama. If it gets very cold it doesn't stay there. I'll take very hot over very cold.
