I know I'm triple posting, but have there been many albums out there released by bands that went on a hiatus for a while and the lead singer/songwriters formed other bands that still sound like the original band? That's a super, super awkwardly worded question but I think you can figure out what I mean. For instance, I assume that if Bear vs. Shark releases a new record, it'll sound a lot like Bars of Gold. Ditto if ATDI releases something, it will probably have a lot of Mars Volta influence. I think a lot of people complained that AVA bled too much into blink. If the Format regroups, it will probably sound like Fun.

Basically, has there been a similar situation in which a band was able to recapture the original sound?

 

Probably used the term a little too loosely, caught me. Regardless though....

Also don't think the new Saosin record sounded a thing like circa despite what others believed

 

Love the instrumentation on the new song. Just not so into the vocals, although I've never really been an Owen fan either. Still a very nice song.

 

Yeah, it definitely had its own feel... the only sticking point being that some unreasonably expected 2003 Anthony Green to come back *exactly* how he sounded on Translating the Name, and when he sounded like modern-day Anthony it was apparently "the same as Circa Survive" lol.

 

Your opinion became irrelevant the moment you said their classic name has been tainted. What a joke.

 

Meh, okay. American Football, and that debut album, is very highly regarded...and I'd say considered a "classic" in some scenes....bbuuutt you're welcome to your opinion also ofcourse :).

 

This whole "they've been tainted" and "they'll ruin their perfect discography" attitude that's been going around needs to stop. There's nothing about this album that will ruin their first album. It's the equivalent of saying the new Ghostbusters movie ruins the original. That's not how it works.

 

Yeah this song sounds like Rockstar by Nickleback. This dad rock trend needs to stop

I can think of very few; like, the latest Desaparecidos album doesn't sound like Bright Eyes, the latest Owls album doesn't sound like Owen or Joan Of Arc (though it doesn't really sound like the first Owls album either). I'm not sure the Descendants ever had an album that didn't sound like them, and I am pretty sure one of them was in Black Flag for a minute while they were on hiatus. I think the amount of time the original band is laid to rest and if it was supposed to be permanent matters -- like most of Evan Weiss' projects sound pretty distinct from each other while maintaining certain songwriting aspects that are consistent to him specifically. The longer a band has been dead, the less likely you can get in that same original mindset imo. Which I don't think is a bad thing.

also the new song was okay, im waiting on context and im only giving it one listen til i have the whole album

 

First song was great, second was okay. Still have really high hopes for this record.

 

I've tried a few times to get into their first album, but it just never sticks for me outside of a few songs (Never Meant and The Summer Ends, in particular). I really enjoy the two new songs, though. Looking forward to hearing the full album.

One of my favorite Rainer Maria songs next to "Tinfoil". So cool to hear Mike's take on the song.

 

Yeah, enjoyed his take. I think you kind of always know what you're getting with a Mike cover, the only one that really surprised me was his cover of Into It. Over It.'s Anchor. Knowing what you're getting doesn't make it less quality.

Sounds great to me. I can already hear the people complaining that it just sounds like another Owen record.

 

Think I'm going to wait for a few more responses before I decide whether or not to listen to the previews..
