It sucks. There's no reason for him to be in anything but the saddest Bruce Willis direct-to-DVD movie. He's a creep and he brings everything he's in down. Would have ruined "Blade Runner 2049" if he was in it more than he was.

 

also I feel like his creepiness fell under the radar because he preyed on fans and I think us talking about that power dynamic as problematic is fairly recent

 

I mean, this bombing won’t do anything to Leto, who’s also in that new Ridley Scott film and the next Tron film currently in development. The reception of this film will be seen through the Sony vs Marvel lens before it’ll be viewed through the Leto lens.

The best thing to hope for is that some reporter at some significant enough publication will connect with enough people willing to talk about their experiences with Leto to write an in depth piece, which then will get enough traction that casting Leto will be too much of a PR nightmare for studios to use him.

 

Shouldn't that have already happened? Didn't multiple women straight up accuse him of rape on Twitter right when MeToo/TimesUp first broke? Whatever happened to those women, they had a story to tell and just disappeared.

 

It obviously hasn’t yet, though. If you Google his name, you don’t get anything about the allegations, nor are they mentioned on his Wikipedia. You have to specifically Google “Jared Leto rape” to find anything, which just amounts to blog & Reddit posts about the allegations. Which, less than half of the posts are aggregates of tweets, with most of them being about James Gunn or Dylan Sprouse commenting on it.

Don’t know if that’s because it somehow hasn’t reached the ears of any reporters (or higher ups?) who care enough, or if it’s because all the victims are too scared of his rabid fan base to go on the record in such an official capacity (understandably so). Either way, of course he’s still getting cast, as an Academy Award winner (ugh) and rock star. And, starring in a Sony Marvel film without Marvel Studios that flops will have no impact on that.

I do vaguely remember some chatter on Twitter or a thread on this site that some publication this past year was supposedly working on something, so maybe we could be on the cusp of his name being publicly associated with sexual misconduct? Here’s hoping.

Disney doesn’t really have any control over his connection to the MCU. Sony is the one in total creative control like the Venom films. Disney has no say with any Spider-Man connections within the film.
