Even though you can’t see his face, the calm mania given off in this shot is super unsettling.

Of course not, and thankfully not. Taking Batman that far down the “gritty,” “grimdark” road leads to some of the dumbest Batman material more often than not. It theoretically can work, but especially for this character, it tends to bring out some of the more tedious comic-book-y tendencies instead.

What makes this movie exciting to me is the heavy Year One influence, which gives it a certain pulp energy that I love (in spite of the suit being more armored than I’d like, but I’ve just accepted that’s part of Batman’s cinematic language). The Robert Pattinson casting also does a shit ton of heavy lifting for me, keeping it from getting too “look how badass Batman is!” Throw in a seemingly flawless Catwoman take, Riddler as the villain, plus a Gordon and Penguin who look pretty legit, and you have as perfect a modern Batman film as the current landscape will allow.

But, if you threw off the guide rails that a PG-13 rating, I’d be concerned that it’d fall off the tracks.

[On that note of “grittiness,” and a note from yesterday… I would kill to see a Poison Ivy with some fabulous drag energy in a sequel. I don’t know when we’ll ever see them allow camp in another live action Batman take, but you can get away with more with your villains. An Ivy (or Harley, but she needs Joker, who I want to pollute this as little as possible!) with that vibe, in a film with a Batman as handsome and tortured and gothic as Pattinson, would warm my soul.]

I agree, Batman works perfectly fine being PG-13. An R rating would be unnecessary.

After watching the trailer again I really can’t find a single character that isn’t dialed up 100%

This might be the first Batman film where every casting choice touched the ceiling.

Tell that to the poor people of Gotham who turn to crime due to various economic factors, only to be brutalized by a rich guy from old money who wears a pointy hat and calls himself “vengeance.”

    :bats:

so help me, if some motherfucker comes in here and discusses the “Batman should fix the city with his money” thing unironically

calling Batman a spoiled rich prick is more of a Harley and Ivy thing and they would be right to say it

I don't get the hype. Just kinda looks like The Dark Knight again to me, granted it's only a trailer /shrug

If this movie is anything close to TDK then it will be at least a top 10 CBM. That’s a big if, though.

Personally, I'm excited for this, but I also think it just looks like a Batman movie. I don't really see anything about this setting it apart from the other Batman movies that have been made. That's not to say I don't still want to see it. I mean, it's Batman. I'll watch Batman.

Also, "what's black, blue, and dead all over" sounds like a real cheeseball of a line.

I’m excited cuz it’s Matt Reeves who made a fantastic modern action trilogy, and it’s Pattinson.

Also we’ve never gotten a “detective/noir” centric Batman movie before. I’m all for it.

All good points, and I admit I am intrigued by what a "detective/noir" Batman movie would look like. Most people think superhero films have to mean spectacle, so I'm fascinated by the prospect of a superhero movie which is not that.

Looks great! I like the overall visual style. Glad to see a new twist on Riddler and Penguin. I wonder what kind of mentions there were be of the joker.
