Posted an article about the video above a ways back. I’m interested to know what game he is referencing.

I’m truly surprised Metroid isn’t more popular considering all the offspring it’s spawned. Dread is the best selling game in the series ever. Gaming is weird…

I wonder somewhat if this is a case of artificial obscurity.

I mean, I can't imagine Metroid games are unprofitable, but I admit I don't know the actual numbers. And yet it's known enough to inspire a portmanteau of a genre.

On the other hand, you have Nintendo, who only makes one Metroid game a century, just like with all their other franchises that aren't Mario, Pokemon, or Zelda.

So how much is it a series that isn't popular enough to be prevalent or prevalent enough to be popular?

It’s clearly a beloved franchise and with the success of Dread, hopefully Nintendo will give it the attention it rightfully deserves.

arent metroidvanias always indie? all things considered, isnt the market for that small by comparison to your standard AAA stuff?

In general, I do think they tend be considered indie and sell considerably less but there are exceptions like Ori.

I'm not sure I'd call it small. I mean, Hollow Knight has sold millions of copies, and while that's just one game, there are plenty of equal success stories in the genre. Ori, Axiom Verge, Guac.

I think I'd say it's enough of an audience to where Metroid deserves to be treated better.

Here is to hoping that Nintendo realizes that.

They make fewer because they don’t sell as well (not the other way around), which is largely because its not a popular franchise in Japan, whereas those others ones you mentioned are. Japan remains hugely important for Nintendo.

This one might be a turning point in terms of overall numbers though. The Switch appears to make everything sell better, except for Tokyo Mirage Sessions :(

The have made plenty of Metroid games though. People just don’t like all of them.

Yeah, I actually forgot Nintendo's decisions are rooted in Japan when I typed that, and let my own experience color my memory.

This article breaks it down fairly well.

Dread has already outsold nearly every Metroid game in Japan | VGC

Being honest, I didn't realize sales of the franchise in Japan were that level of terrible. That's... incredible.

Japan has definitely been a mobile market. The Switch has changed that narrative. Xbox is killing it there as well.

The Switch hasn’t changed the narrative. In Japan, the Switch is being marketed as a handheld first precisely because Japan is mobile (incl. handheld market).

Pretty much what I said. Also, I don't know about you but I wouldn't want lug a switch everywhere but I am glad they are embracing it.

Closing in on finishing the main game in Spider-Man. It's been fun and the story is decent but the game does fall victim to the typical open world fatigue. With that being said, there is definitely satisfaction in gliding/webbing around the city.

I think Japan’s mobile/handheld-first culture has less (though of course not nothing) to do with portability and more with living room space

Picked up a Twin Charging Station for my PS5 controllers because the charging life is dreadful. Hopefully this will remedy the problem.
