I’m stoked for tonight in FTL.

The more I listen to the album, the more I wish they put Annie on the setlist lol

Bands can play as little or as much new/old material as they want imo. However, one thing I wish bands would start doing is upload their setlist beforehand under spoiler tags so that those who would get upset over representation could have the option to not go instead of feeling "slighted" that they didn't play what you wanted. If you like what you see, then go. Artists should have as much artistic influence of their own shows as they desire. If you'd rather not see the setlist, then it would still be hidden; make it like a clickable link on an Insta bio or a dedicated page on their site. I feel like that's a healthy compromise.

Though, it'd be dope if the order was alphabetical so the sequencing of the night could still be a surprise.

Manchester were great last night, but they’re always great.

Foxing threw some people for a loop opening with 737. You could tell people were being lulled at first, then got hit with one of the hardest and loudest moments I’ve seen from the band to wake everyone up.

Slothrust was solid and fit into the lineup really well. Definitely made me want to give their new album another listen on the long drive home to put some of the songs into better context following the good live show.

This is an interesting concept. Maybe you could take it even a step further as to suggesting what kind of music might be played on the tour prior to tickets becoming available. Lots of Bands are good at indicating what to expect (like a new album release tour or anniversary you gotta know what to expect). But maybe if your band is at a crossroads stylistically or between albums, just make it obvious to set expectations. Some bands are pretty good at doing this.

I do enjoy having a set list to be surprise, and obviously they can change organically, but a tentative set list (accessible to only those who want spoilers) would benefit some and maybe prevent people from shouting song titles out constantly.

haha…not really. Bad Religion did a recorded concert series and announced they were doing and 80’s set, 90’s set, 00’s set and 2010’s set. It was great and managed expectations. I get it was for online shows but it made it clear without touching on tracks that’d be played.

Ive seen bands mention they’d be playing deeper cuts before on certain tours too.

Well there are film reviewers and movie trailers to set expectations. Also, IMDb.com can identify which actors are in it.

Also lots of movies are based on books and comics hahaha

If sarcarsm, this is a good counterargument and I didn't really think of it in that way. Honestly, I don't mind what a band plays at a show cuz I'm going to enjoy it regardless of the songs, as I typically go to shows where I either like the majority of their discography or at the bare minimum their latest record. I was just trying to provide a potential solution to any "old fan" tension, but I digress. Sorry to anyone who thought the idea was stupid or flattened the value of going to a show.

At the very least there's dialogue, which I'm enjoying. Sorry it's not what you're into and I hope there's some banger posts for you in the future.

Don’t apologize. I thought it was a cool idea. I’ve seen bands announce tour specifics before. I’ve actually heard very few bands refer to “Phases”, and it is usually more fans that put labels on eras.

I also tend to go see shows from bands where I like their discography. I will say, most bands I’ve seen do play songs from their whole discography (except for maybe omitting those albums before they got traction).

People always say bands can play what they want until a band goes ahead and plays Degausssr twice in a set and people are like “WTF?”.

Glad I checked this thread, Slothurst rips hard!

I see no problem with a setlist and a spoiler alert with it. There's a few bands I have no interest seeing newer stuff, MO's one if I'm being honest. Say Anything another. Setlist determines if I'd want to see those bands. METN and IALV are probably in my top 10 of fav albums ever, I'm huge into all of RAGC releases and the last batch of albums that are a bit more technical sounding are just kinda meh for me.

If you're doing the movie comparison, that's what rotten tomatoes is for so I think that comparison just doesn't land.

    Newbie

part of the reason that tours that happen immediately post-release are so heavy on new material is to sell you on the new record. I don’t mean sell in a commercial sense; I mean sell like convince. I can’t count the number of times I was on the fence about a song until I saw it live. some records just click when you see the material live.

in truth though, I just think the “play more old stuff” mentality is kind of silly; with that we don’t get progression and growth and I can’t imagine how it must feel for artists to pour their hearts and souls into a new project and then have people just ask for their old stuff.

Just saw them in FTL. I genuinely think Andy was in a horriiiible mood and I’ll be honest and say the amount of new songs they played, mixed with the lack of positive audience reception, made it come out wonky. The only songs that got a reaction were Shake It Out and Virgin lol

  21. The new stuff is objectively more popular.

When you have a bunch of records and people are connected to them I do think as fans buying tickets you want that album you love acknowledged. When you’ve released a new album, of course it should be at the forefront of your live show. I think people want to know that there’s a chance to hear an older song they connect with too though.

I’m sure if this discussion was happening in another bands thread people might have a different opinion too.

The tech already exists. Check Setlist.fm before you go to a show if you’re into that kinda thing.

If you are into that, I don’t understand you & I never will. Peeping the setlist is like using x-ray on a present before you open it. I don’t really see the point.

I wasn't saying they shouldn't rep their new stuff or shouldn't play whatever they feel or want to play. Just saying the setlist thing, which yea is a thing already lmao that I'll check depending on the band. Certain bands a show of deep cuts would be the most amazing thing in the world for me, I know their entire catalogue and other bands deep cuts would leave me pretty unsatisfied cause I like to sing a long/move to stuff I have an emotional connection to. I don't imagine that bands should come and play on my whims, but I'm saying there is merit in checking setlists depending on the experience that you want and your level of fandom with the band determining whether certain people would want to go see the show or not.

I was at this show in Boston when Gaslight Anthem was touring Handwritten, and I always think back on it as an example of a really well-rounded set list -->

The Gaslight Anthem Setlist at House of Blues, Boston

They played a bunch of songs from the new album they were touring, sprinkled in songs from all of their albums - even Sink or Swim from before they really got popular - and we even got 3(!) absolutely killer b-sides! Such an amazing setlist. As someone who tends to love b-sides, and particularly these b-sides from this band, it was so cool to have been at that show.

Would I say it was perfect? No, because I'm not really a fan of bands playing cover songs at concerts. I was there to see Gaslight play Gaslight songs, and I didn't really want to hear any Pearl Jam songs, even if State of Love and Trust is a great song and it was a cool cover version. Is that a really stupid personal hangup that makes no fucking sense whatsoever? Absolutely. It's really dumb, and I understand that. I also get that as much as I was pumped to get the three b-sides, including a debut of one never heard before, someone else may have been annoyed by that. It is what it is.

I also do think it's kinda cool when bands will play an album all the way through in concert, but from what I've seen they usually announce it beforehand and everyone there knows what the deal is, plus I've seen them do an encore afterwards where they play a few other songs too.

I don't think I've ever thought to check setlists of a band touring before going to see them, but I can say that I would definitely not buy tickets to go see these guys once I had already found out they're only playing songs from the last two albums, even though it is completely and totally their right to do exactly that, or whatever the hell else they want up on stage.
