There's a nova fan in the sports forum. I picked MSU to get to the FF but lose. I had UNC/Kansas in the final with Kansas winning it all but I was trying to make some money in a work pool and everyone in Lansing, Mich. picked MSU.

But back to the point in hand: Syracuse needs to play a real defense. Fuck the zone.

 

I feel ya. I had WVU and MSU both in the Final Four because I clearly did something at some point in time to piss some greater power off. And it was brokendown who is the Nova fan. I don't know why I would ever confuse the two of you, though. Been a long week.

Regarding the point in hand: The zone fucking rules! That thing is a well oiled machine. I can't understand how anyone who has ever played basketball could watch that and just not be in awe of it. When it's running on all cylinders, it's a scary fucking thing and I love it.

Because the zone is there to mitigate any discrepancy in talent between two teams. There's no need for Cuse to run it because they are equal or better athletically than most teams they will play. Play man-to-man defense like the game was meant to be played!

 

Ah, but that misses the true beauty of it. With superior talent, the zone also mitigates laziness. If your team is having an off night or not trying that hard, its still not something teams face enough to be truly prepared for. And only a small handful of teams have the 6'8"+ dude who can knock down 15+ foot shots to destroy it.

Its cowardice is actually its strength.

 

1.) I bet if you put tracking devices on the Syracuse players you would actually see that they are more active in their zone than 99% of other teams who play man-to-man all game long.
2.) The zone Syracuse runs isn't anything like your typical 2-3 zone. If you really break down its nuances, there are a ton of man-to-man principles in it. And it's never the same look twice. That thing flows and evolves as the game progresses if the players are doing what they're supposed to be doing.
3.) I could talk about this all night but really don't want to because I'm trying to power through some GoT so stop egging me on and accept that the zone is the best and the state of Michigan is slowly but surely becoming absorbed by the Ottoman Empire. See: Dave Bing, Derrick Coleman, Rob Murphy. If the Pistons had been smart and drafted Melo, no one would even remember MSU or the stupid Wolverines.

Rob Murphy's doing work at Eastern Michigan. I'm really impressed with it because Ypsilanti, Mich. is a god damn shit hole. What a depressing city. You're like a stone's throw away from Ann Arbor which is an awesome town. It's like everything cool left Ypsilanti at the same time and they never bothered to rebuild anything. But I'm only stopping because this is the wrong thread for a breakdown on such a cowardly defense.
