If Nintendo really wanted to make everyone happy they would announce that the last character tomorrow is actually news that there will be another season of DLC. This is the last smash bros game of this caliber ever. Sakurai even said that if there is another game that it’s highly unlikely this roster will return. It’s the highest selling fighting game of all time. You know Nintendo just swims in the money it makes. If Nintendo was smart they would continue DLC support for this game until the Switch stopped production.

Nintendo caught lightning in a bottle with Smash Bros and the spectacle it brings. The sky is the limit with the surprises. No other game will match it.

My actual mood:

 

He could easily have this character be the end of season 2 and then announce a season 3 next year while taking a year off. I’d be fine with him announcing a fighter pass 3 tomorrow and saying it would be released in 2023.

 

The thing is, I don’t know how you go back from Ultimate. How do you follow this game up? Seriously, it’s not possible.

They should just keep the game alive in perpetuity and keep doing fighter passes. Not saying do any more for a while, of course, but like when Switch 2 comes out they should have a port of Ultimate ready to go on Day 1 and then start up another series of new character drops. Let Sakurai take the next two years off and then get back to work in 2023. Or hand it off to new people. But don’t try to make a new game with less characters.

 

I was wondering this exactly in the lead up to this last fighter. Supporting the game perpetually makes more sense than a sequel. At least until they can make some huge graphical leap I guess?

Exactly! They made a point at launch to include every fighter, wouldn’t mind at all if they just kept building off it

It really doesn't make more sense given how much a new Smash games would sell, even if it's barely a new game. It only make sense for a while. Mario Kart 8 for example somehow hasn't stopped selling yet,.
