Such a great game. I still have not played the Perfect Chronology version for the 3DS, but I will get around to it eventually.

On another note, I finally decided to dive back into Eastward, and I'm almost done with Chapter 1 again, this time taking care to complete everything I can possibly complete before moving onward.

They could make the coolest fucking Lunar game in 2021

 

Bruh I've heard such bad things about Shadowlands. My friend who has played since Vanilla launched and has logged months of playtime quit

 

They absolutely could. I would give up organs plural for a Lunar game that looked as good as Ni No Kuni or Dragon Quest XI, but really I don't even care if they just left it 2D and made the prettiest goddamn 2D game in existence.

It is a crime that the best looking Lunar game so far is from the original PlayStation era. Games have come so far since then. Why Game Arts? Why hast thou forsaken us?

Like, where even is Game Arts anyway? They haven't made an original game since Dokuro in 2012. Since then they've only ported the Grandia games to PC. Which, while I'm wishing, I'd love a new Grandia too.

battle for Azeroth was bad enough I didn’t need a content patch excuse for an expansion to follow it up. I think I got to like level 55 and dipped

Still an incredible game, and in a recency bias skewed poll, I'd take it over a lot of those games that made it far in there.

 

Long is the list of amazing JRPG franchises that were killed by terrible games. Breath of Fire 5, Lunar Dragon Song, Grandia 3, Golden Sun Dark Dawn....

 

The third area in Returnal is no joke. Game is still a blast. They just turned the difficulty from 10 to 15.

I don't know if I'd call those games terrible exactly. At least Grandia 3 and Dark Dawn I had a lot of fun with.

I think there are a lot of factors, and climate plays a role. I feel like around the time many of those franchises went dormant, JRPGs were a little less in vogue. I know for a time, it felt like only Square was legitimately still interested in making JRPGs, unless it was on a portable console.

Then the paradigm shifted. Now you have Nippon Ichi and Falcom porting all their franchises to Steam, you have what used to be niche brands like Persona and Tales making big waves, you have companies like Kemco and Idea Factory able to completely devote their business model to JRPGs.

It's a great time to be a fan of the genre, and why it's the perfect time to dust off these old licenses. Where is Wild Arms? Where is Suikoden? Let's get this nostalgia trip on the road!

Anyway, going back to Dark Dawn a sec, I feel like the problem is that Camelot got too ambitious with their design. I mean, the first Golden Sun was clearly intended to be the first part of a story, so I feel like they wanted to replicate that design with Dark Dawn, but I think they did their job too well... the game ended just as things were getting interesting, and then they didn't have Part 4 ready and waiting to go.

I can only hope that they're able to make a conclusion for the Switch. I did hear rumblings that Camelot might be in an RPG mood currently...

 

An expansion for what might be the best game of all time is coming out today. If you havent played this and like exploration based games, pick it up, its incredible.

I honestly have no idea what my favorite game would be. I think about it and then see a game listed by one of you and think how could I possibly forget that. After thinking about it hard, in no order:

Like fuck I just saw Anthony posted Bioshock. How could I forget that?! That would probably replace DD. Fun to think about though.

 

I tried so hard to play Outer Wilds, but the game makes me so nauseous which bums me out because everything I've seen/heard about it is fantastic.

 

same. it’s one of the only games that has done it to me and I’ve tried multiple times, same effect everytime.

 

It's that and Mario Galaxy that do it to me. Mario isn't as bad, but yeah, Outer Wilds gives me a bad headache and makes me feel like I'm about to vomit. It's such a bummer.
