Kid went back to daycare today for the first time since June. We got through the winter/spring without one case at this school as far as we know, but…sigh. So depressing to have to worry about this again

 

First day of preschool!

My daughter has been in daycare since August last year. Thankfully not a single case in their school and they take it super seriously, but yeah it's stressful.

Son just started 1st grade and that school is way less on top of it. Will be a tough semester.

 

The fact your son is in 1st grade makes me feel sooooo Old

I have finally figured out the missing link in my life. Something that would make me truly happy: Having kids.

To help fold all of these fucking loads of laundry. Child labor laws, be damned.

 

A four person household just has so much laundry... it legit never ends. When you think you've caught up, checking all the rooms three times over to ensure you've got everything done (including the weekly bedding wash), the second you put down your guard and walk away proud of yourself for conquering the laundry boss is right when your kids somehow pull out an entire loads worth of stuff you somehow missed and the vicious cycle (no pun intended) starts again.

 

Can confirm that.

 

I don’t know the two of us have so much. And now my dryer broke so that’s lovely.

This is where I would post about laundry machines in the Reasons to be Grateful thread.

 

Kind of going through a scary time with our 7-year-old son for the past week or so. Last week he was really sick, high fever for 5/6 straight days and pretty much every single illness symptom you could imagine (vomiting, stomach issues, headache, sore throat, stuffy nose, etc).

He tested negative for COVID two times, and negative for Strep two times. On Friday, our doctor wanted us to do lab work, and on Friday night she called to tell us the lab work revealed a low white blood cell count, which is scary, because when you're sick, the white blood cell count should be higher than normal because white blood cells fight infections.

On Saturday though, she called to tell us that he tested positive for para influenza so she's hoping that between the viral infection and the bacterial infection he also had, she thinks that may have temporarily lowered his WBC. That said, she wants to have him tested again today or tomorrow to see if his WBC has fluctuated at all and wants to make sure he's not 'trending downward.'

Unfortunately, I'm not sure they will fluctuate back up. I've been telling my wife for a few months now that I am kind of concerned with his immune system, because he always seems to catch anything and everything, despite no one else in the family (including our younger daughter), or those around him, catching it. He's had strep a ton of times, hand foot and mouth several times and just in general seems to be sick every few months. My wife always plays it off as 'well, kids are always sick' but now that we have the lab work, it's kind of eye opening.

Luckily, none of these infections have ever been serious or life threatening or anything, but still it sucks to see your kid sick all the time and it's even scarier to think that it may be due to his body not being able to fight them off as strongly as other people.

If the WBC comes back low again, we'll probably have to send him to an immunologist.

Needless to say, my wife and I have been freaking out about all this for the past three days.

That's awful to hear and I'm sure an emotional journey! Hoping for the best and for peace. Sometimes the waiting is worse than the result.

 

Thanks! She did put him on antibiotics on Friday because she said whatever viral infection he had (which we later learned was para influenza) turned into a bacterial infection in throat/ears. So once he started the antibiotics he was pretty much back to normal.

We've made it part of our older kids' duties to sort and fold their laundry once they turned 5. It's been about 6 months and it's going surprisingly well.

They're also almost tall enough to reach the washing machine so soon they'll be able to start adding their own laundry to the washer and starting that too. We just got a new one last week and it has "Load and Go" laundry detergent so they don't even have to handle that part.

 

This sounds a lot like my childhood friend who finally discovered he had celiac disease. Hoping for the best.

 

UPDATE: Took my son for more bloodwork yesterday afternoon and the doctor called back this morning to let us know his White Blood Cell count nearly doubled and all the other bloodwork was normal so she's not concerned.

My son is in K now and I guess they have some sort of snack time. The kid leaves with his mouth blue from 'juice'. His mom and I don't give him anything other than milk and water. I'm kind of disappointed they're giving them these sugary drinks, especially something that's blue. Like not even apple or OJ. Anyone been in this position before? I reminded my son that it's not good for him and we send him to school with water.

 

It’s a boy! And free of chromosomal abnormalities.
