I believe some mainstream publications called it a “pandemic anthem” because it was a positive hit at the start of lockdown.

    “Rainbow” is incredible.

If I had to pick a weakest it’s the title track

Oh Rainbow is beautiful, undeniably. Just probably my least favorite on that album.

Omg I accidentally listened to this for the first time on shuffle and was so confused when it ended on If This Was a Movie. Was genuinely perplexed how that could possibly be a closer and when I realized what happened... smh. Have listened to it in order several times since. I like it. Someone close to me is going through a divorce and she's had it on a lot so I'm glad if it can help people thru that. Makes me wanna go back thru her catalog tho

Mother and Velvet Elvis were always my two least favourites on that album. Don't love Rainbow or Wonder Woman either but the rest is fantastic. All of her albums have a handful of songs I don't love and a lot that I do, I think this one continues that.

How can you not love “Rainbow,” I just don’t understand.

Not my favourite song on that album, but 'Die Fun' is a top 3 Kacey vocal track for me.

Wonder Woman and Velvet Elvis are my two least favorites. Like both songs though

Love Mother and Rainbow. My girlfriend listens to playlists on Spotify a lot and Rainbow comes up often -- I think maybe that has something to do with its higher numbers too

The biggest throwback vocal phrasing is

“Chronological order ain’t nothin’ but torture.
Scroll too far back, that’s what you get.
I don’t wanna see em but I can’t delete em
It just doesn’t feel right yet.”

Even just the melody on "chronological order" sounds like vintage Kacey.

I re-listened to Pageant Material last night and it's even more apparent now that Star-Crossed only has about 10% the amount of personality behind it, both sonically and lyrically.

Craig, I was not onboard with you pointing out how big the sonic departure actually is, but I am in full agreement with you now. A song like There Is a Light would be entirely different if it wasn't padded out by two minutes of pop style vamping.

Rainbow is gorgeous. No one is saying they don't like it. Golden Hour is nearly perfect to me--it's just that's the one track I'd choose as the weakest. I still listen to it every time and love it.

It's kind of amazing how much personality and charisma comes through on Pageant Material. I haven't heard a pop album with that much personality in years, this one included.

I like velvet Elvis as a song but not necessarily on that specific album.

Agree 100% - Those 2 songs are so weak compared to the rest of the album

while I agree this song overall has more of her vibes on it, I do find it to be in a very cheesy and eye-rolling way. I dunno, the idea of scrolling through your camera roll to see old photos isn't really all that enticing to me

Mother is absolutely necessary to Golden Hour. To just toss off something that good is unfair to all other musicians. In the liner notes, it even says "written in an hour by"

A couple of listens in and it's a fine modern pop album

Unfortunately, the disappointment for me comes after hearing Golden Hour and feeling like her sound had expanded to the point where she could literally try anything on this album. I wanted her to go a little wild and just experiment with new sounds and ideas.

It feels like a bit of a climbdown to put out a generic sounding pop album with quite bland lyrics

Also, considering the album is all about divorce, where is the darkness?! It's not exactly 'Here My Dear' is it?

I have to laugh about Anthony Whatever giving this record a 2 (and a 4 on Golden Hour???) while one of my friends agrees with him (and he has never liked Kacey!) and I'm just like..."How is Golden Hour bland?" "How is star-crossed BAD?"

Every year or so I think "hmm maybe I will check look at a review from the melon bro, maybe it's not as bad as I remember"

last night i saw posted somewhere that he "reviewed" this album.

I was flabbergasted, the ENTIRE "review" is literally going track by track and.... just saying what happens in the song. Like, the closer he literally was like "this one is in spanish. it is a cover of a song by this dude. it starts off sounding like this, then it sounds like this, then it sounds like this" .... that is not a review, that is a play-by-play commentary on what you are listening to.

sigh, whatever, it shouldnt make me angry but i can't believe people watch this shit like there's anything worthwhile
