I don't think the quality of what I have is great but it is separate files

I don't think it's close to BI, BI. The songs on that record were better and the experimentation paid off more fully. I assume most people will rank it higher than For Emma in the long run, but I would probably put it as his weakest. Still some astonishing moments though. There's plenty to look forward to if you're a fan.

I'm liking it but I end up comparing it to how much I loved the live version whenever I listen unfortunately.

I'm getting past this now, luckily.

Hopefully I will. I genuinely thought this could be his best album when I watched it live though and now I'm not sure I'll even like it more than FE.

Ah, I knew my first time through that I wouldn't like it as much as Bon Iver, Bon Iver, so maybe that's why the live version isn't impacting my impressions of this much anymore after six or so listens. I will probably go back to the live version eventually though to see if it like it more. There are still some production choices here that I am not a fan of.

Yeah, likewise. The main being the vocals in Strafford.

the only productions choices i'm not super keen on is the couple times in the album when it gets super crackly momentarily. happens in "over soon" and couple of times and then towards the end of "strafford apts". really kind of hurts my ears and i don't really like what he's going for with it. they're very brief moments and don't really detract from my overall enjoyment of the record, but i do wish he omitted them.

I think I'll hold off listening again until I have it in decent quality.

I don't like these at all.

That crackly bit in strattford is my favourite moment in the entire album. It makes it so much more impactful when it becomes clear again.

I agree that it does make the payoff better, but I'd still prefer it not to be there.

so should I just wait? I can't discern how shitty/OK the quality of the leak is from everybody's posts gd

It's pretty bad. Listenable but still bad.

I'm waiting because it's a Bon Iver record and for whatever reason it feels wrong listening to the leak. Odd arbitrary moral line I've drawn for myself.

Yep. Really having trouble with the studio version of that song.

If you don't mind me asking, how could you know that? And also, why would you wanna go into a new record with that mindset?

anyway i only listened to the leak once and my first impressions are that comparing this to bi,bi or for emma is a pretty foolish thing to even attempt.

I mean BI, BI is probably one of my top five records of all time but I'm still going into this expecting the possibility that I'll like it more. Why wouldn't I? Weird.

On that same note though, I can't listen to BI, BI without craving seeing those songs live again. I was always a pretty passive fan until I saw him at the Eaux Claires festival and now I'm a much bigger fan.

But I still want that album live. So knowing that, I skipped this live leak because I know the studio version won't hold a candle to it.

Also, this. His progression has been unreal and these albums all have to be treated separately.

I just didn't like the songs as much. There are some songs on here I don't care for much. Whereas BI, BI is one of those albums that just knocked me on my ass the first time through.

*to clarify, I meant that I knew after my first time listening to these songs that I wasn't going to like the album as much as BI, BI. I didn't start my first listen unwilling to like it more, though I absolutely think you can get to a point with your favorite artists/albums where they mean so much to you that they can't be topped. Bon Iver isn't quite there for me yet, but BI, BI is probably pretty close.

Im not a big fan of the idea that you cant compare things that aren't similar. Trying to figure out which album is objectively better is a bit of a lost cause since they are so different, but you can pretty easily decide which one you think is better and discuss that. As long as we are aware of recency bias and nostalgia in those conversations, I think its perfectly fine.

For instance, I think I will end up liking this one around as much as BI, BI. Basically every song has started to hit me pretty hard over the past couple days and that didnt really ever happen for the last album.

I mean since the records are so different the discussion won't go much farther than "I like this one better"
