just watched Homicide and it was... different... than i thought it would be. what didnt you like about House of Games? (havent seen it.) i am a big fan of Mamet's plays.

 

I hate the stilted acting and the really ungainly style of the dialogue. It's apparently his signature, so I'm prob just not a fan

I do love Glengarry Glen Ross though

 

yeah i think a lot of people misunderstand Mamet and say "that's how people *really* talk and that's what makes him so good" when in fact i think it's specifically how people *don't talk,* it's a deconstruction that purposefully emphasizes manipulations, half-truths, equivocations, and other cynical ways we mislead others with our words, which can be really off putting to some. i personally like it, but i figure it's probably better on stage or paper - in movies it's harder to get that rhythm right imo because it's not in the reader's head and is a specific take chosen out of many.

 

Oh yeah it's definitely not meant to be realistic at all.

 

I could not finish Glengarry Glenn Ross

 

saw Kubo and the Two Strings a lil while ago and it was phenomenal. Laika just makes incredible movies. it was surprisingly darker in theme in certain places than i thought it would go, and i appreciate that. the ending was a bit on the nose with it's themes/moral but i can forgive that given how good the rest of it was.
pissed it had such a tiny opening weekend take.

Sisters is like Grown Ups level bad. I guess this this is why Fey and Poehler haven't done a movie together in a while.

If you meant that it's really hard to watch and hammers home the running theme of the viewer being just as reprehensible as the person they're viewing...sure?

Sorry I enjoy a movie you don't. Many of my favorite films have moments where the characters are acting in reprehensible ways to drive the point home to the viewer that this type of behavior is indeed reprehensible (Funny Games; Irreversible). In no way do I condone any of this behavior because I enjoy movies that deal with it in some form or another.
