I'm an every year phone upgrade-er, but the watch I've been doing every two or so. I have the 6 now, and likely won't bother with the 7 unless they offer some absurd trade-in on my 6.

I do pretty desperately need a new Macbook, though. 7.5 years seems to be the time they start going downhill, which is really just incredible when you consider that a comparable PC would be obsolete in 2-3 years, tops. My mid-2014 Macbook Pro has better specs than plenty of current higher end Windows laptops. My last one died before I could trade it in (at right around 8 years), so I'm hoping to keep this one alive long enough to get a good $450 or so from Apple to put toward my next one.

I really don't need a Pro anymore, though, and was really considering jumping to the M1 Air. Think I'm going to hold off until the announcement of the new Pros, though, just in case they really blow me away with the new 14" model. I've got a 15" now and don't necessarily mind downsizing, but I'd prefer 14" over 13".

Does anyone else think Apple is on a bit of a weird path right now? Don’t get me wrong I think Tim has done an amazing job at the helm but a part of me has been very reminiscent of the Jobs and Ive era again recently. I think it’s partially to do with the fact Cook isn’t a very product person and that has shined through in a few of Apples recent releases.

The whole child photography scan seems to have rocked the boat more than they have anticipated.

 

I'm not trying to be a contrarian but Apple is better than it ever was rn. Absurdly so.

 

I think they’re coasting a bit on iPhone tech right now tbh, but they’re so dominant in the US market that there’s no incentive for them to do anything else. Where I live in the Asia Pacific region huge numbers of people are migrating to Android with folding phones, in-screen fingerprint scanners etc., it seems like that tech is a very long way away from finding its way into an iPhone which is increasingly just more of the same with a few small camera and processor refinements year on year. If the rumours about the iPhone 13 are true this might be the first time in a long time that I don’t upgrade yearly.

Where Cook has done an amazing job however is with their services business.

 

I genuinely don’t understand the appeal of a folding phone

 

Folding phones are not worth it for their fragility, but the Z Flip3 is a beautiful phone. I like the flip phone design for foldables vs a folding tablet

 

I think every single product they currently make is the best it's ever been. Their chips are world beating and Ive leaving has led to great improvements simply by rolling back some of his missteps (plus some of the best designs the devices have ever had: iMac, iPad Pro, latest Watch, no more butterfly keyboard, new remote).

Hard to find that much to complain about right now on the product side.

 

The Cook stat that still blows my mind: Shares of Apple have soared 1,022% since Tim Cook became CEO in August of 2011.

Yeah this will be mostly iPhone, watch, AirPods. Maybe iPad but I think that’s April.

 

Honestly they just need to give me a MagSafe charger with a 6’ cable and I’ll be happy this year. That’s how low my bar is for once.

On the subject of AirPods, not sure if anyone else has had this experience, but I had the original ones and hated them. Wound up giving them to my girlfriend. I bought the Pros and they're easily my favorite headphones I've ever owned.

 

When did the current iPad Air come out? How long until we should expect a new one?

I want to get an iPad, but I much prefer the full screen style of the Air/Pro without the home button and large bezels, but I don’t want to shell out the money for a Pro as I don’t need all the extra bells and whistles for my usage.
