which sounds paradoxical when it comes to a song sounding like another song but sets a terrible precedent for taking inspiration when creating. the prevailing laws and attitudes surrounding sampling are already bad enough. now songwriters aren't safe to pull from other sources to create their own music.

Such an idiotic precedent to set. No way Paramore deserves writing credits on that song, no way Taylor Swift deserves writing credits on "Deja Vu." If you can't pull basic influence from other artists without having to give them writing credits, we might as well close up shop on this fucker right now.

it's honestly unreal. It sets a precedent for the entirety of music history to be eligible for frivolous lawsuits. If Misery Business and good 4 u are close enough to warrant this, but good lord don't listen to any music from the 50s-70s

while I would like to blame him as much as anyone else, that situation is definitely Marvin Gaye's estate's fault. As much as you do or don't like Thicke and the song, the lawsuit itself is why we are having these issues

I just meant the lawsuit not saying who was at fault

  7. Pretty sure this was done on the publication side and not at the band member’s insistence.

If those 2 songs are close enough to get a writing credit, nearly every pop punk band could sue each other

While I totally believe that, it kinda skivvys me out that Hayley posted it on her account like she's flaunting it as a good thing

pretty weird of hayley to post about it

  12. She’s literally saying the publisher is cashing in … from my reading of the wording

  15. Yeah we are through the looking glass now. Just look at how many people in the Brutal vid thread think it’s a bad thing a song g sounds like another. Very strange to me that we now conflate inspiration with rip off imo

im used to this shit with sampling, being a beat maker and sampling shit myself and it being such a predominant thing in one of my most listened to genres, but the same principles apply to songwriting. i always side with as much creative freedom as possible being a good thing. blatant rip offs with no heart can be sniffed out from a mile away. lazy sampling that doesnt elevate its source material is obvious as well. but people dismiss sampling across the board, and people dismiss songs that sound like other songs across the board. its weird and i dont like it in either case.

Yeah it’s definitely a bit strange for Hayley to be posting about it, like bragging (not exactly, but for lack of a better word) about taking a percentage of sales (from a song she doesn’t even like playing anymore!) from a young artist. It just feels weird.

great example. when rihanna covered tame impala's new person, same old mistakes, and changed absolutely nothing about it and just laid her own vocals over the instrumental. and kevin parker said this is fucking awesome. that was great. thats how everyone should be.

that's an insanely uncharitable reading of hayley's post that she likely put .1 seconds of thought into. i mean i think its weird she posted but shes obviously not like nice im taking money from a young artist, sick.

Just feels like a weird thing to post. I personally wouldn't want to shine a light on the situation if I were in her shoes.

  24. I dunno. Maybe I’m giving her too much of a benefit of the doubt, but I think as a trailblazing young woman in the music industry who has been through the ringer herself, that she *gets* it. Or maybe she legit thinks they “stole” MB, a song she herself retired, and is bragging about getting a bag. But that doesn’t feel like the person I have followed for years at this point. (Maybe she’ll say more, but I don’t feel like prying so I didn’t ask anyone.)

I agree with you that I've never had that vibe from her either, I do feel like she "gets" things. I certainly would be interested in her talking about this situation in the future, we'll see....
