    what a waste of wood

I didn’t have crazy high expectations for this but it’s very, very good.

there’s nothing i dislike about this but i’d come back to their stuff so much more often if each album was, like, 20 minutes shorter. i finished my run with it on and was just over halfway done with the album lol

this ones literally 20 minutes longer than the other long ones.

and actually both Automatas and Parallax 1 fit that bill.

this is missing almost all of the interesting type melodic motifs that are all over and reprise on Colors 1. think the intros of Ants and Prequel, the end of White Walls etc. for example. not alot of solos here comparatively either. that songwriting is really what makes Colors a revered album.

Human is Hell is really the only thing that really approaches that (and its almost White Walls in a slightly different key?)

I aspire to be! I did a 5 hour run on Friday with the intent of listening to this and Deafheaven, but opted in the end to go without headphones.

I'd like to add that I have listened to Colors 1 dozens and dozens and dozens of times since its release. Listening to this, I could not pick out but maybe 2 references after my first listen. 1) The opening of Double Helix maybe sounded like Decade of Statues? 2) Some singing part in Rev in Limbo was a repeat lyric from Colors? I think?

I don't have a good ear for this.

yeah they don't feel super connected. it feels like just a new BTBAM album going back to a slightly older sound from them. it's enjoyable but doesn't really feel like a sequel

We reach for the longest shadow

Aside from callbacks, I think this is more of a continuation of Automata than Colors.

I mean it in a good way though. I love Automata, especially the first part. Condemned to the Gallows, Yellow Eyes, Millions, they're all great.

For my tastes right now, definitely. I prefer more melody and less bone crushingly heavy stuff in my progressive metal these days.

Colors 1 is more melodic AND more heavy than Parallax 2 for me

I need to hear Parallax 2 again its been too long and its a good album

relistening to the discog (starting at Colors and skipping Coma ) and it always surprises me how much I like TGM. I always think its my least favorite, but I always enjoy it way more than I think I do. Parallax II is still so good though. I think Colors, Parallax II and Colors II and my top 3. Still love Automata too though.

I like Alaska, but with this band I just get in moods to listen to their style of spacey prog metal, and that's not really what Alaska is. I should revisit it soon. I forget that I was super into it before Colors even came out.

the breaks in Backwards Marathon and Autodidact are as good as the ones on Colors. same goes for the melodic rifts of Selkies, Primer, and Alaska.

They fixed your brain when you were young.

All Bodies is the song that made me fall in love with this band. I liked them prior, but wouldn't call myself a fan. Hearing that song changed it all. That being said, I don't revisit Alaska too much and am generally in Colors on territory.

I stan pretty hard for Automata but it's pretty obvious that Colors II is way better after listening to them back to back. I'll allow calling it a return to form as long as that form is Parallax II.

Didn't realize on first listen that Tommy screams "Between The Buried and Me" multiple times at the end of Double Helix. That part in particular slaps.
