It’s hard to beat those first two albums but I do think Marauder is very good and underrated

 

It's funny you say this because I was thinking that this album is like their "Shelter" career-wise but I definitely get where you're coming from with the Kodama comparison

 

the drum fill at 3:55 in villain is just so fucking buttery. obviously daniel's drumming talent has never been in question (especially on new bermuda), but god damn there is some fucking incredible work here. very complex yet tasteful stuff.

I do enjoy El Pintor, Marauder, and the Fine Mess EP though.

Man I love Mombasa so much. I love when it just goes off like that, pure catharsis, and then it just cuts out.

 

I just feel so lifted during the '30 months' portion of Villain. So many great moments in this record.

 

This is unbelievable. I honestly never thought they could top Dream House (just in terms of my favorite song) but man… Mombasa comes close. Record seemingly gets better with every track.

 

That transition from Neptune into Lament

 

Not sure how I feel about this yet. After one go through I do wish there was more screaming but something grabbed me because I want to listen to it again.

the only silly thing I have to say about prior convos is that this is “shoegaze” in the same way the Peripheral Vision is “shoegaze”

Lol I was listening to THAT part in Mombasa for the first time at the same time I was reading about it in the stereo gum premature evaluation - know exactly what they’re talking about lol

I’m usually pretty receptive to poppier directions/dropped screaming, albeit begrudgingly sometimes, but this bored me, missed the screams dearly. Gonna have to give it more listens.

 

Fair to say my AOTY is already settled after listening to this

 

This is cool. I thought I was getting a call when Mombasa just cut off like that haha. Some of it kinda blends into one (sure that'll change with repeat listens) but the big moments are huge. Enjoyable for sure!

 

Neptune is strangely beautiful, I'd listen to an album of this.

 

It’s definitely a contender for me. So many strong albums this year.

As someone who drifted away from Deafheaven after Sunbather, this is a welcome return for me to be back to being all in.
