I just bought a house I don’t like (it’s a shame you can’t like “test drive” these things for a week) and I have felt like I’ve made a huge mistake but this gives me hope. I can’t live here for years.

It's complete bullshit. I mean when you are not even giving raises that keep up with inflation/COL increases it becomes increasingly clear.

I have had a terrible, terrible boss which that situation really fucked me up mentally during it and has made me really gun shy to jumping companies because like I said I really enjoy the two people I am under at my current gig. That whole grass isn't always greener thing.

With student loans like mine, 6 figures would still need me to budget carefully if I wanted to own a home heh.

This is why I have so much anxiety about buying, coupled with the market now and how quick those decisions need to be made for one of the biggest purchases of my life.

Though I have been noticing houses around here having price cuts in Zillow so maybe the market is finally cooling down a bit here.

I don't mind saying, but I make (over) $100k, though I am also the only income for our family of 5. It's sufficient for not worrying about things day to day, but when you still have student loans, and think about saving for retirement (ha!) and providing for kids down the line, it still feels like nowhere near enough.

i was renting a room at a house my friend owned for a bit until he sold it, pretty sure he owned it for maybe a year and a half to two years before selling. my older brother closed on his house about two years ago and is currently looking with his fiance for a new one. a lot of people look at a house as a huge very long term commitment but my parents moved like 3 or 4 times while i was growing up.

i was gonna say i dont think 100k goes nearly as far these days as it did when that number became the golden ticket in my head

I still struggle with understanding how there are that many jobs that pay that amount of money to own all of these nice, big houses all over the metro area I am in. Like passing those places where its just subdivision next to subdivision with McMansions and I am just like how do these people do it.

Same. I'm very grateful I don't have to worry about bills at the moment, but my student loans would make it difficult to start a family and buy a home. Two things that I think anyone should be able to afford in this country.

One of the things that's great about today's world is that a lot of the jobs where you can reliably make 6 figures also require degrees that will basically saddle you with a second mortgage once you obtain them.

  15. 20 years ago when we thought 100k would have been enough, maybe it would have been.

But 100k after taxes, rent or mortgage, student loans, trying to save for retirement, health care, car loan, food, daycare, save for kids college, etc etc...

We’ll see there’s definitely things with the house and property I can change and have started working on those but I ultimately I just misjudged this area and really miss my old neighborhood. Maybe it will grow on me though.

Yeah, we can pay our mortgage and bills, buy groceries and other necessities and nice to haves, but at the end of the month we don't have a ton to put away for everything we want to save for.

A lot of those are money coming from parents/grandparents and people way over-leveraging themselves.

Yeah, when I graduated law school, my original thought is that I would be able to easily get a job making at least $60k a year and I was used to living on less than $30k so I could put a ton toward my loans, pay them off quick, and be clear. Then I graduated into the worst recession in nearly a century and set myself back several years.

Yeah, like, I make 6 figures but I had to go $150,000 into debt in order to do it. At this point in my life I often wish I hadn't done that but, you know, it almost doesn't feel real until you actually have to start paying it back.

  21. I know this isn't very socialist at all but I do think the best way to think of your house is as an investment. whether you can get yourself to think of it like that emotionally is definitely a different story but thats really what it is

Plus the false promises used to sell you on that debt. "This is an investment. You will easily recoup it in no time."

To some degree, you have to play the game based on the rules you're given, even when you're working to change those rules. A lot of this discourse about whether you can be a homeowner and a socialist at the same time just comes across as the "And yet you participate in society hmmm??" comic.
