Let's hold our breath until we disappear

Still surprised The Offspring isn’t on at all this year

Just for fun: This Clashfinder with estimated set times looks fairly reasonable (except Sunday) and has some good guesses for album plays.

Sublime with Rome doing Sublime and those two Circle Jerks records are definitely options that are in play. And TBH, if they did self-titled... a Lawrence Arms/Sublime conflict would be a major bummer.

So we're expecting another poster update soon with Simple Plan removed and a replacement, right? I just cant see them traveling to the US for one show when the rest of their tour was cancelled.

They probably didn't want to tour but felt safe playing one date especially with the entry requirements riot has

    Fuck Morrissey.

Thursday is definitely going to be very meh for us now, as I don't give a shit about him/wish he wouldn't be on the festival

Outside of that, I'm just really fucking excited to be able to go this year.

Big difference between hopping a flight for a single date and traveling via bus for 2-3 months.

Also: Is it possible that LTJ plays Thursday now? That would be a pretty fun add on a stage counter to MozFest

Slipknot fans aren’t really happy about them being added granted I don’t think they understand how riot fest works or what they are all about. The comments on Reddit and Facebook and Twitter are a shit show

Morrissey is definitely a problematic pick and wonder if many artists would shy away from being associated with him in any way these days. Having said that he's had some decent artists open shows for him in recent years like Interpol, Future Islands, Billy Idol, Blondie, Joan Jett, and Starcrawler. The Smoking Popes seems like a logical band for Morrissey to add since he has complimented them numerous times over the years.

Are they not happy about them being added because they can't go, or what? I hadn't even thought of that angle. It's the one day that's sold out. So any of their fans who weren't going already... Won't be able to get in.

It wasn't quite as aggressive as it became shortly thereafter, but he was definitely problematic in 2016 and people didn't shy away from sharing the stage with him then. So, I dunno.

I doubt most bands would turn down a festival slot just because he's on the bill. They probably wouldn't tour with him, but a festival slot is a different thing. Some of it probably depends on how they went about the "curation" and how obvious it is. Like, if there's a stage of Morrissey picks and its designated as such? Yeah, I can see bands not wanting to be associated. But if it's more like he gets to pick the openers on his stage? Less of an issue. If that makes sense.

I also really don't know in what format the "very special guests" will be performing. Meaning, will it just be other musicians joining him during his set? Or will it be bands doing a set as part of the line-up? The way its worded leaves room for interpretation. I'm assuming it'll be bands on the bill doing proper sets but again, it's just oddly worded.

Assuming it's bands... I doubt many of the bigger names you just threw out there will be pulled in just because of the cost, travel, etc. But the Smoking Popes would certainly be in the mix and a welcome addition!

no it’s more of the lineup and people not knowing who half the people are and it’s people who hate Mgk and don’t understand why they where booked on a fest that has him also how Corey shit talked him a couple months ago. I don’t think it’s actually about them not being able to go. I think it’s a combination of what I just said and them not understanding how riot fest works or what they are about or how they always book very popular people. You could always take a dip and read and see for your self lol

I mean I’m stoked they are playing. Getting to see them there then at Tinley will be cool. Just sucks cuz that means I’ll be late to tbs aftershow cus I don’t think I was gonna stay for all of nin and now I’m gonna stay for all of slipknot

I’m genuinely curious what bands will be playing Thursday now… I wonder if any bands we assumed would be out/weren’t added to Riot will be on for Thursday night. Perhaps some that were on Lolla, or have already played Chicago this year

I just remembered, didn’t somebody mention that Thurston Moore is playing Chicago around Riot Fest and had the potential to play the pre-party? I’m starting to think he might be a likely candidate for the lineup, and would fit pretty well on a lineup with Morrissey

Sorry, I wasn't clear in my comment. I was referring to Morrissey's provocative comments on a number of issues in recent years and his support of a far right and anti-immigrant party in UK rather than him being difficult at Riot Fest 2016 or his propensity for cancelling gigs. It's not a coincidence that he currently doesn't have a record label and I suspect some acts that opened for him or guested on his albums in recent years wouldn't do so if asked today. I have low expectations for a lineup curated by Morrissey and was just throwing out names of artists that he's been associated with in recent years. I would definitely welcome the Smoking Popes playing on Thursday as well and it seems like a possibility based on their past association.

I did. That was terrible advice. Haha. Holy hell...

Well, since the rules are all out the window now and everyone already knows he's an asshole? Yeah. I can see Thurston Moore doing it! Haha.

I'm trying to remain optimistic about it. After processing the news and sitting with it... I am leaning more toward Morrissey getting a stage and "picking" some openers. It might even just be people on-stage with him. I think it's really odd that they say "special guests" and not like, "curating the bands for the day."

But regardless. If we're expecting multiple stages I'm anticipating that'll only account for one of them.

Oh, I knew what you were referring to. Hah. He had problematic comments and takes before 2016 though it certainly ramped up in the years following... It was known. But yeah, I dunno who he could bring on as a special guest that might say yes at this point. Because, yeah, the ones he's been associated with recently are bigger and older acts that would want $$$ and a primo set time. Haha.

What time we thinking those aftershows get announced? 10am CST with on-sale at noon?

  21. That's my guess, yeah.
I really need something good to make up for some of this shitty news.

But I think we're all forgetting. There's still hope. Morrissey could always curate Weird Al...

are we still lucky to be here? Prestigious

As much as I hate Morrissey at this point, it's depressing that this is my initial thought when he was booked to curate the lineup. I doubt we'll get anything close to it, but I'd love to see some stuff like Cold Cave, Drab Majesty, and Nothing get on the Riot lineup to diversify their portfolio even more. In reality, we'll probably just get Morrissey sniffing his own farts for 5 hours, but one can hope.

I don't think I've ever seen such a unanimously negative reaction to an artist being booked on a festival. Like, there's usually at least a few people saying "Yeah, I get it but... Fucking legend!" All I'm seeing is "fuck that guy."

Wonder if the Morrissey fans are in hiding. But it's feeling like this definitely backfired on Riot Fest. The vocal core are lashing out. Somebody went so far as to start a petition to have him removed. I doubt any of it will have an impact but... Wild to watch.
