saw a summery of the review that compared it to a Foals record? I think this person was just listening to something completely different.

yeah it is interesting that the only musical analog brought up that makes any sense in that review is passion pit. the rest are nowhere near the sound of this album

All I read was the blurb and I dont disagree with the 2010s festival rock statement, assuming that means 2010s indie pop. Thats a style I listen to alot of fwiw.

I assume festival rock to be emotionless indie rock.

Thank you to everyone that posted new music review sites for me! I’ve got a lot of cool new stuff to sift through.

Anybody else think Lightning sounds a little bit like Foxy Shazam?

I started comparing this band to foxy Shazam when I heard “gameshark” way back when but yes the influence still exists

this is pretty easily my favorite album this year in the rock or rock related genre. Turnstile could best it, but this tops Manchester Orchestra for me. Also open to other rock-related recs from this year I might have missed, I feel like it's harder and harder to find good current rock bands

Only insomuch as it sounds like Queen and Foxy Shazam also has a clear Queen influence.

Oh man I've been meaning to listen to deafheaven! I really liked the first single, thanks for the reminder

I mean, there's definitely a similarity with some Foals stuff (I love this song and the Foxing album by the way, I'm not referencing this as a slight):

Not sure if I missed a post pointing this out but listening to this for the first time w lyrics in front of me and did anyone notice that the end of 737 makes a reference to each track on the album

  20. Interesting, I always thought "GameShark" and the more bass-heavy, poppier tracks here ("Go Down Together") sounded a bit like Portugal The Man

  21. Modest Mouse remains my favorite album of the year so far, but this is in my top 10. Also Spirit of the Beehive, but that's a bit weirder than "rock" music.

I do really like this but it’s not quite hitting me as AOTY material. Not that it really matters. It’s a good record and it could also grow on me more.

I don’t think anything has topped Another Michael for me this year tbh which I would have never expected bc I had no idea who the band was when I hit play for the first time on that one lol. Japanese Breakfast is so far the thing that’s given it the most run for it’s money but I haven’t come back to it as much as I expected to. I think it’s less bc of the quality of the album and more I have been in a different headspace musically lately.

it honestly is hard for me to put into words that don’t turn even me off weirdly haha. I saw ppl compare it to pinegrove but tbh it feels more 60s/70s folky (especially in the production and melodic choices made) than the more alt-country realm that pinegrove hovers in. the singer’s voice reminds me of a (pls don’t shoot me y'all I still like him on the whole) less grating Nate Ruess. his sense of melody and the band’s sense of harmony and dynamics are imo v adept for a band as new as they are. sounds like ppl who have been playing together forever. idk! ultimately it’s just an album that came out at a perfect time (winter turning to spring) and will probably be perfect for fall too. it’s just music that makes me feel super warm and fuzzy inside tbh.

the opener is pretty brief and probably my favorite song of the year so I will link that if you wanna check it!
