Ultimately a main reason why I don’t write as often anymore but might be busting out a deafheaven review soon (and probably this too) because mainly I can’t let my last review ever be one about the front bottoms haha

 

Oh, for sure. Really just meant in an ideal scenario, that’s what advances are meant to combat even if it doesn’t always shake out that way. But yeah there’s definitely a hustle to it for those aspire to make writing a career and that sucks for everyone involved

 

Glad Connor said something. I haven’t read the review, but I’m sure people on Twitter will wanna go after the journalist.

Im still super curious what this material sounded like before Man Orch came on board - and if all the buzz back in early 2020 was before or after their involvment

Finding myself going back to about 4-5 songs consistently more than the rest of the album. At times I’ll still let it play through (minus “Lightning”) but for the most part in finding I really like 4-5 songs while being ok with the rest.

 

tbh I sent it to my Mormon mother in her mid-60's after reading this review bc it made me realize how it's such easy listening it's basically just elevator music thank god for pitchfork /s

 

I haven’t listened to anything from this album yet, but the review actually made me more excited to check it out.

 

At the end of the day, the ability to criticize does and should go both ways. Really not a fan of when criticism of reviews just gets written off as "You just don't like that someone else feels differently than you". Just like art is up for criticism, so is the quality of the criticism itself. Saying a review is bad or poorly written or uninformed doesn't mean you're just mad that someone doesn't like something that you like. That reaction really needs to just stop happening. Reviewers aren't insulated from criticism of themselves.

saying jenn pelly is a good writer and then being like “but the fiona apple 10 was obviously cynical” when she wrote that review and i bet she was the first person to push for that 10… fucking absolute nonsense

 

pitchfork is not a monolith and most of their writers are FUCKING FREELANCERS, it is not a fucking conspiracy

 

You guys just need to concede that there are better albums that have come out this year

Not to digress from the main topic (I like DDTM a lot after becoming a Foxing fan from NMG), but since there are a lot of people passionate about music criticism in this thread currently, I was wondering if anyone had recommendations on outlets/writers etc that are doing good music journalism these days?

I used to be really into sites like punknews.org, The AV club & of course ap.net a decade ago (cough) but those places aren’t the same anymore and outside of the chorus message boards I haven’t felt a real connection to any other music space.
