I saw someone put it really well on Twitter the other day and now I can’t unsee what the Rays are possibly doing.

Basically, the Rays lack of a starting rotation has become a feature and not a glitch.

Not that they wouldn’t gladly get some healthy starting pitching off the IL, but their true depth is in their bullpen arms and they’re ok with piecing together 4-5 innings of bullpen work a night because they have a lot of quality arms with a lot of minor league options. Which is why they are sending down guys who just pitched 2 innings and calling up someone fresh seemingly every other day.

This thread makes better sense of that.

I would imagine their expanded roster spots for the postseason would include a lot of guys who can go 1-2 innings if they can still find success with this trend.

@oncenowagain Curious of your take here - do you think they just continue rotating the OF throughout the playoffs? Last postseason I started to notice some actual “regularities” in their lineups.

Who are the two odd men out when you have Meadows, Margot, Arozarena, KK, and Phillips all playing well?? KK and Margot make a case just for their glove - it’s weird to say that Phillips is hitting better this year than KK but it’s the truth.

Meadows can DH of course but with Cruz in the picture too, it continues to create a logjam. This of course is a good problem to have , but thought I’d ask your take?

 

I really think that this year, more than any before, Cash has fully employed the matchup game. I would expect that they continue to have a flexible and dynamic lineup through the post season since it’s what’s worked to this point.

And like you said, there’s no way that they can deny playing time to any one of them. If I were to pick one guy that may be a regular in a postseason lineup, regardless of matchups, it’s Randy. His defense is far improved to the point where I can see cash putting him in one of the corner spots each night.
