The 1990's saw the film industry move in opposing directions. Films like Independence Day and Armageddon signaled the coming end of the thoughtful blockbuster in exchange for the louder, dumber, cruder variety, but at the same time the independent scene that Steven Soderbergh had helped kickstart in the late 1980's was really beginning to take shape. Of the ten winners so far, which is your favorite and why?

We will extend this to one week to get a range of responses.

This is so hard. 8 of these films are masterpieces, and the other two (Dazed and Confused and Silence of the Lambs) are still great. I assume it is an easy Goodfellas win, but my heart must follow Starship Troopers.

One of my biggest takeaways from this experience has been how good the 90's were. I didn't realize it (and admittedly there may be some bias since it's the first decade I can remember), but the sheer number of high-quality movies each year was impressive.

Going with Goodfellas (my #2 movie of all time) in the absence of A Brighter Summer Day (my #1 movie of all time). Lebowski is close

Goodfellas was the fairly easy choice for me, though I haven't seen Dazed and Confused or Twin Peaks.

The rest of the films are excellent, but Before Sunrise was the only thing that made me hesistate for a second before choosing Goodfellas.

SOtL winning that year is pretty crazy, looking back at the competition*.

It should be noted that the actual greatest film of the decade is The Thin Red Line, but it was unfairly dismissed.

I love the first nine, and Silence of the Lambs is also very good even if it's a step down from the rest imo.

Surprised by how many of the winners I have actually seen and even though not all of them I voted for they are definitely six superb efforts. It was difficult to come to a decision over which I would vote for though but when thinking it over as much as I love Goodfellas, I do on the whole prefer Casino whereas with Starship Troopers there isn't anything from that decade that is like it and better than it so that gets my vote.

All good to incredible films but pls can we get one non-American film in the next decade. I was pleasantly surprised when Videodrome (and Come and See, even though I haven’t gotten around to it yet) made the cut last round.

Does In The Mood for Love have a good chance next year? American Psycho seems like its biggest competition. Spirited Away seems like another one with a good chance.

In the Mood For Love would be nice to see, it’s likely going to be my number one pick for that year. Spirited Away seems like a potential one but it’s also the year of Mulholland Drive. Early Bong Joon-ho or Oldboy could factor in somewhere. I’m not the biggest fan but Pan’s Labyrinth is also massively popular, although it’s also the year of The Departed.

I would choose Children of Men over The Departed or Pan's Labyrinth.

Werckmeister Harmonies is going to be too obscure. 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days is going to get overshadowed by There Will Be Blood.

Looking at Letterboxd lists, a surprisingly popular one is Dogtooth. Cache is up there too.
