You have no idea how much worse it gets.

I know people don’t like to remember what happened to this show but Dexter was the original GOT in how sharply it declined in quality.

question for the thread: is GOT worth diving into? will the end belie every bit of goodwill created in seasons prior?

  5. I've only seen half of an episode, but from what I've heard from friends and whatnot, I think people should probably just plan on watching everything except the final season in order to stay happy.

It's way more than the last season that's bad. Similar to Dexter it gradually gets worse and worse about 60% of the way through, culminating in a heartbreakingly bad finale. There are people who will say that it's still worth watching. But I'm not one of those people. It was so massively disappointing.

It’s not worth it at all, it’s terrible and they had some appalling storylines years before the final season completely botched the ending. The only reason I don’t regret wasting my time on it is because the discussions while I watched here went beyond just the show itself and were super interesting. Absolutely no way I’d do it now.

I never quite understood the vitriol for the finale. It wasn't good, but people act like it ruined the entire show. I thought it was a fantastic show that started to sputter out by the end, but I didn't think that the whole show was ruined or anything.

We are watching through it now and are almost done with season 5. The drop off from season 4 to season 5 in quality was huge. We might take a break before jumping into season 6.

started The White Lotus last night and while I'm not a particularly big fan thus far, it does get better with each episode so I have faith

The finale was definitely bad, but yeah, the show ruined itself way before then. The drop-off occurs around s5 or so, IMO. I also stuck with it because so much of the cultural conversation centered around the show, not like the show itself was doing anything that kept me intrigued.

They also said they were so incompetent they learned how to run a show on the job which is absurd

I think the Red Wedding episode is a perfect piece of television and it goes downhill from there.

Quality aside, I think it’s going to be one of those shows we look at and say “Why did we have to have sexual assault in like every storyline? (See also: “Outlander”)

My feeling on GOT in retrospect is that you can really tell the point where the showrunners no longer had the books to run off of and were flying by the seat of their pants. It's the point where events stopped being slow burning and started just happening with no real relative connection to things like travel time.

That being said, I wasn't what you would call unhappy with the way the show played out up until that final season. I felt like events were really super rushed and a couple characters had their development sharply derailed for the sake of trying to tie things up neatly.

The funny thing, back when the show was running, I actually had discussions with people where I was defending some of the creative decisions that now I look back on and think, man, I wish that hadn't happened.

@Zilla I don't even know about that. Remembering back to the Red Wedding episode, the extreme ONSCREEN violence (and also against a pregnant character!) is pretty unjustifiable. Sure, in context you can excuse it, but years away from that level of excess in TV or film and it just seems so unnecessary. Why did it ever need to be so brutal?

Idk I would say s1-4 are good to great. It’s still worth it, but yes the sextoposition is bad. Plus the treatment of female actors we now know was terrible.

I didn’t know that Dexter was coming back for basically another season. That’s wild.

It’s not a reboot and it’s not a prequel it’s just... another 8 episodes that take place a year after the finale like eight years after it originally ended.

probably gonna watch at least the first episode to see what they do with getting Dexter where he is (because from what I read he may or may not be still in Oregon cutting wood)
