Genuinely kinda shocked that Weezer nor Green Day extended their sets with a whole headliner off the bill.

Green Day not adding King for a Day/Shout, however, is a blessing we all should be thankful for.

When you have these huge productions, how easy is it to add songs?

People say this a lot, but there are plenty of major arena & stadium acts that change their setlists regularly. For professionals that do it every day, it can’t be that hard. I think more acts just prefer to keep their set & production as is because it’s rehearsed and flows well. But if it were that hard, there wouldn’t be so many exceptions to the “rule”

Literally throw up a generic GD logo, put the stage lights on and play 3-4 extra songs. It’s just laziness at this point.

Agreed. Radiohead plays a different set every single night, usually with at least 10 song changes. And they have all sorts of craziness going on as far as production goes, including screens all over the place. Green Day and Weezer should’ve (been allowed to?) played more songs.

There are a lot of bands that play stadiums/arenas who have big productions and change their setlist almost every night like Pearl Jam, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica. So its not hard.

Aside from all the cancellation/COVID talk, I did a recent dive into all 3 band's catalog in preparation for the show at Citi Field last week. Quick rundown:

    Weezer

WEEZER (BLUE ALBUM) - Still a stone cold classic. So much magic in these songs. Perfect mix of guitar fuzz, pop melodies and awkward charm.
PINKERTON - Definitely the yang to the blue album's yin. Much darker and messier but brilliant songs. Some of this is a tad cringe-y in 2021. I remember it coming out in the fall of 1996 and not being interested since it wasn't immediate but glad I gave it a second shake
WEEZER (GREEN ALBUM) - Lacking any of the emotions of the first two but a killer neat little power-pop record. Shame they don't reissue it with all the b-sides floating around.
MALADROIT - Big riff-rock record, probably in attempt to compete with the nu-metal/post-grunge that was a big at the time. A few duds on here but overall still pretty great.
MAKE BELIEVE - My least favorite and Weezer at their most adult-contemporary sounding. It has the same confessional songwriting as Pinkerton but now, coming from a man in his (then) mid-30's, it's like bland mid-tempo DAd-rock
WEEZER (RED ALBUM) - A few surprises on here and I dig the experimentation but the block of songs towards the back half that the other members contribute are really dreadful.
RADITUDE - Probably where most people lost their patience with this band but this is a fun experiment with big late 00's pop combined with Weezer signature dorky guitar-rock. Bonus tracks include some bangers as well.
HURLEY - Nothing bad to say about this but nothing good. Some perfectly competent songs but all I can really remember about this record is the fact that it exists.
DEATH TO FALSE METAL - Similar to Hurley, I mainly just think of this one as "Existing". Also, points off for not being an ACTUAL b-side collection and getting stuff from Green Album/Maladroit on here.
EVERYTHING WILL BE ALRIGHT IN THE END - Decent return-to-form record that every band is required to do at some point. If you miss your blue album sound, this is a nice-to-have but not essential.
WEEZER (WHITE ALBUM) - Probably what EWBAITE was supposed to be. Just a glorious, well-crafted, snappy and hooky beach album.
PACIFIC DAYDREAM - Using the template of the White album, the sound is expanded and includes more keyboards but still a fun breezy record.
WEEZER (BLACK ALBUM) - Their overall weirdest in terms of presentation but I still appreciate the sonic variety.
OK HUMAN - Really stunning project and is great for headphone/quarantine-listening. I hope they do more with the orchestra.
VAN WEEZER - Obviously influenced by hair metal while incorporating their power-pop influences but more fun/playful than Maladroit ever was.

    Fall Out Boy

(NOTE: Not including Evening With Your Girlfriend as that album should be wiped from existence)

TAKE THIS TO YOUR GRAVE - Surprisingly stands up pretty well and gives you an idea of how far ahead of the Warped Tour pack they were even in 2003. Some of the "Girl-done-nice-guy" wrong lyrics don't hold up well but the songwriting, arrangements and production still kick.
MY HEART WILL ALWAYS BE THE B-SIDE TO MY TONGUE - Nice little stop-gap project. Odd that they didn't re-record "Cocaine" as an electric song as well.
FROM UNDER THE CORK TREE - Pretty much TTTYG on steroids with a few new tricks such as the band introducing acoustics, slowing the tempos while also almost engaging in hardcore bits. Plus the singles still slam.
INFINITY ON HIGH - The band took notice of the pop songs they were on the radio next to and started incorporating some elements. 1-8 on this song are absoutely flawless though there are a few duds in the back. Still, the production and Patrick's voice on this record are incredible
FOLIE A DEUX - This one is the perennial "under-rated" album due to there being a bit of exhaustion with the whole scene and many of their fans growing up and moving on to other genres. I think this album is 2/3 great and contains some of the best stuff they've ever done (such as "(Shipped Gold) Standard") while there are some other tracks that do nothing for me.
SAVE ROCK AND ROLL - Similar to Green DAy's comeback in 2004, you rarely see comebacks like this with a whole new style incorporated. It's essentially Fall Out Boy 2.0 ditching the pop-punk sound and embracing modern Top 40 in a more aggressive way than Infinity On High
AMERICAN BEAUTY/AMERICAN PSYCHO - Really just Save Rock and Roll pt 2 with the band going further down the path. Some obvious hits on here as the chart success indicates but more misses.
MANIA - Probably pushed the experimentation a bit too far with this one but I think it holds up pretty well. Like Folie A Deux, it will probably only be represented by 1 song in the setlist moving forward.

    Green Day

1039/SMOOTHED OUT SLAPPY HOURS - Amazing how fully formed a lot of these songs were given they were so young. Compared to, like, Blink 182's "Chesire Cat" this is a solid debut.
KERPLUNK - Definitely perfected the previous album's formula, with sharper songwriting. Production is a bit tinny given it's on an indie label in the early 90's.
    DOOKIE - Still a stone-cold classic, undeniable 14 songs of pop-punk greatness
INSOMNIAC - Stands up well against Dookie. Almost can be considered Dookie in minor chord. Whole thing is relentlessly grim though but wish they'd revisit more songs from this live
NIMROD - Transitional record where the band tries out a bunch of styles. You can definitely hear the seeds of Warning in songs like "Walking Alone" and even AI with "Haushinka"
WARNING - This album constantly gets described us under-rated so now I think it's actually properly rated. At the time, people were kind of over Green Day and the jangle-pop sound was in stark contrast to Blink 182 mania and the pop-punk of New Found Glory, Good CHarlotte, etc. Still a great record but I don't think it's as amazing as people claim
AMERICAN IDIOT - Never seen such a roaring comeback like this. A phenomenal record that's a major artistic achievement. Deserves all the praise
21ST CENTURY BREAKDOWN - Builds on AI and incorporates and even grander sound. Some people may think it runs too lon but I still think there is some of the best stuff the band has ever done.
UNO - Neat little power-pop record but drags a bit towards the end.
DOS - Neat little garage-rock album but has a few flat out duds (Wild One, Nightlight) along with some bangers
TRE - Think there was a bit of exhaustion at the time and these probably would have landed better if presented as a b-sides comp but some good stuff on here
REVOLUTION RADIO - Was commonly called a "return to form" but really it's just a well-rounded summary of the band now being a professional rock band
FATHER OF ALL - Some fun catchy bangers on here though I think this would have landed better under the Foxboro Hot Tubs moniker

It can be done. I realize there are time cues and and pyro and all that stuff (Green Day's set was time down to minute at Fenway to make sure they were done at 10:30pm on the dot), but there's always ways to break into that and, as others have mentioned, throw up some generic logos or even shut the screens off for a few songs.

I've seen bands do it. Fall Out Boy, in particular. I was at one of the Wiz Khalifa-less dates of their 2015 amphitheater tour and they played a few extra songs. They put their logo up on the screens and had some generic lights. It was great.

Fenway was an incredible time and seeing Green Day for the first time since 2005 did not disappoint. I opted for the premium "permanent" seats for this show and while I enjoyed the view, I think I'd prefer to stick with turf there going forward. Live and learn. It's still huge bummer about FOB and I really disagree with how they handled it, but it was a great time nonetheless.

Weezer literally played an off tour date like two days ago with the same stage setup and added like 4 songs

Odd there has been a total press blackout for this tour. Be curious to hear the perspective from the bands/crew in a year or so.

That show got Holiday and The Good Life. Those would be some good adds to the regular Hella Mega dates

Tonight was great! Weezer was pretty good, but nothing compared to the production and scale of FOB and Green Day, who were both terrific. Green Day's set was honestly one of the best I've ever seen, such an incredible show.

Show last night was so good. My first concert in 19 months. Timed it perfectly because as we got into the parking lot a storm rolled through, doors were delayed opening a little but show started on time.

The Interrupters were great, love their energy. The crowd was still filling in because like I said, the doors didn't end up opening until almost 5pm and the show still started at 5:30

Weezer was excellent and had a great setlist (bummed for no Perfect Situation and If You're Wondering...but no big deal). Much of the crowd wasn't too into them, especially my section where most people were sitting down, kinda lame lol.

Fall Out Boy was my favorite of the night. Their production was so good and nice to hear a few oldies in the setlist.

Green Day was a blast. Fun crowd, great setlist, great production with all the fireworks and stuff. My only complaint is I could do without Billie Joe making the crowd do the "heys" and "hos" and chanting after basically every song lol, just imagine how many more songs they could play without those antics.

First time I had ever been to Hershey Stadium and my only complaint is that parking was ridiculous. Parked in a large grass lot that had one entrance/exit, one lane. Merging dozens of rows of cars into one lane takes a very long time especially when there is no one directing traffic at all.
