I'll always find people warning that a trailer contains spoilers hilarious.

Why? Some trailers do a nice job at just teasing the movie and build excitement, while others straight up give away the entire movie. I think it's a valid criticism and warning

  7. A lot of horror movie trailers give away some of their best scares. I specifically remember the Fast&Furious 6 trailer showing the climactic action bit and watching the trailer in theaters like wtf ha.

I don't go to many movies these days because they give away most of the movie in the trailer itself

It's fair to prefer initial viewings with as little information as possible. At the same time, official trailer content shouldn't be considered "spoilers," and truly good movies can't be spoiled.

I just think people put too much stock into both "spoilers" and trailers. Enjoy the movie as is, sure there's the pure feeling of experiencing every moment as it happens, but that should be secondary to appreciating a film as it is. Knowing Darth Vader is Luke's father does not lessen the Empire Strikes Back as a film at all. I get wanting to avoid information about a film beforehand. I totally get it. But I think too many people are too focused on spoilers as a concept, in many cases over understanding that knowing surface details does not change the experience of a film or story significantly.

I also think people care too much about trailers. They're commercials for movies, a third party takes clips of an existing work and creates their own tone and narrative that's completely separate from the original work. It's marketing. They don't speak to a film's quality or tone or thematics or character or anything important.

That spoiler is impossible to avoid now, and I'm sure the movie is fine regardless of knowing it...but there's no denying it would be soooo much better going in without knowing that.

Agree to disagree, but there's a pretty substantial difference between a vague trailer teasing some cool shit you'll see vs a condensed version of the movie that gives everything away. Imagine how you'd feel if the trailer for Force Awakens showed Han Solo dying. Would it take away from the film in general? No. Would it personally spoil you're initial viewing? Absolutely.

I am personally very happy when I see the warning that the trailer gives away too much.

I would have been fine. I wouldn't have knowingly spoiled it for someone who cares, but I would have been unphased. And if it had been in a trailer, it wouldn't be a spoiler.

I disagree. The reading of Darth Vader as a character is far more interesting knowing he's Luke's father than him just being a bad guy. The visceral feeling of the reveal is worth less than the further understanding of the character.

Well, no, I don't think it'd be a lesser viewing experience knowing he's going to die. There's a reason they don't put moments like that in trailers. You're also talking to someone who doesn't think the Force Awakens is a very good movie, which is why knowing Han Solo dies beforehand wouldn't change much for me, but that's besides the point. I specifically mentioned surface plot details. Not climactic moments or character deaths. There are people who think knowing character names is a spoiler, I think I remember people thinking the Force Awakens Vanity Fair photoshoot was a "spoiler" since it showed characters in costume, particularly Adam Driver unmasked as Kylo Ren.

That's your prerogative, more power to you. I'm all for people not placing any value in trailers.

Well then I think we're on the same side. Some trailers show the bare minimum, surface plot details and some other teases. That's fine. BUT some trailers are a start to finish summary of the movie. The latter deserves a warning for people who just enjoy watching a movie and want to experience the ride first hand.

That's the heart of the argument. Does the trailer show too much of the story, maybe reveal shit that would have been cool to experience first hand for people who care? Then a warning is valid. If you care more about being a film scholar and dissecting everything without taking the ride of an average audience member, then whatever. A warning won't ruin your experience

I very fondly remember doing this walking out of Episode 3 in High School, there was a girl who responded "thank you Mr. Blow-The-Picture-For-Me". We dated for a year.

So, September 30th is this years Force Friday.

I plan on buying some black series, some Funko, and probably the U-Wing Lego set. I'll get a chance to buy Lego stuff 50% off in December, so I will buy more of them then.

I got up early last year and waited in line for several hours at Toys 'R Us with all the other silly adults. When they finally opened, I was in awe of the selection. I picked up action figures, miniature playsets, Legos, toy ships, etc. I wandered around for like an hour with this stuff only to eventually put everything back. All I ended up buying was a stuffed BB-8 the size of a tennis ball and a kid's bowl/plate/cup set with First Order pictures all over them. I'm not a very good shopper.

As long you enjoyed yourself, who cares?

I live in between two cities so when I went to my Walmart 3 minutes away last year I waked in to exactly 2 other people there for it, got what I wanted and left at 12:01. They had begun setting up early so I actually picked out my stuff at like 11:45 right after i got there. I had to wait for midnight for the register to be able to ring it up. I know some people had to wait in lines and then not get what they wanted. I am lucky to live here for random things like this.

Alexandre Desplat is being replaced by Michael Giacchino as composer, apparently because the reshoots created scheduling conflicts.

Don't know how I feel about this. Giacchino is a perfect fit for Star Wars but a) I'm worried the score will be rushed by bringing him on so late and b) This implies that the reshoots were far more than what was planned like Disney wants us to think. The fact that they were so extensive that they had to replace the composer is more troubling than all the unconfirmed reshoot rumors, at least to me personally.
