Yeah, personally I dont feel Chevelle playing is a stretch. Not for Thursday preview, but I can see them playing one day

I just responded to that, hah. I'm not saying Chevelle won't ever play Riot Fest. Of all the "butt rock" bands, I'd say they are the ones most closely aligned with the Riot vibe. They're from Chicago and I could actually see them on a stage with some heavier hard rock acts at some point (Mastodon immediately comes to mind).

But why would Riot Fest book them as a surprise act at an event that is meant to specifically cater to people who are (presumably) Riot Fest die-hards who kept their tickets after the postponement in 2020 because they trusted that Riot Fest would be able to curate something cool?

I don't mind Chevelle. I actively like a bunch of their songs and I'd definitely want to check them out. But man, would it be a confusing look for Riot to throw them on Thursday night like that. They just aren't in the festival's core wheelhouse.

I mean obviously Riot Fest goes outside their normal wheelhouse a little during the festival. But I just don’t see them doing it for Thursday night unless they already had close ties to the band or members of the band. That is all I meant.

TBH, I think the longer we go without any more information... The wilder these predictions are going to get.

They are just waiting until after Lolla so they can announce that Miley and Limp are both playing on Thursday.

If we dont have any updates in a few weeks, we will start posting about Limp Bizkit and Carly Rae Jepsen again.

TBH, I think the theory that they're waiting until after Lolla to announce anything might be accurate. Whether it's because the festival is probably hogging up local news cycles or if it's for COVID related reasons (to see how the protocols work/what the impact is, to see if the event winds up being a "mass spreader" despite the protocols) I'm not sure.

But I'm really starting to think it'll be post-Lola that we get an update on anything else.

Don't threaten me with a mediocre time!

So Dropkick Murphys and Bosstones just announced a show in Iowa for Friday, so I assume that they are both out for Thursday. But that makes me wonder if Rancid will play Thursday because they seem like a band that would do it and also would like being at Riot Fest extra days just to hang out anyway. Or maybe it means we are getting an Op Ivy reunion on Thursday! (Just kidding on that last part unfortunately.)

Chevelle, in my eyes, are like, the only post-grunge band of the early 2000’s that still gets a good rep. And I think there’s a lot of crossover fandom with people that enjoy a lot of 90’s-early 2000’s alt metal (Tool, Deftones, etc), so I could def see Chevelle playing down the line

The Murphys are out for Thursday anyway, as that's the day they're playing Summer Fest.

But it's worth noting that the B2B tour has a few weeks off before picking back up again. The dates stop on 9/1 and then pick-up again with Riot Fest. Which doesn't make it a sure thing, IMHO.

But it's entirely possible that Rancid flies out, plays Thursday, chills on Friday, and then does their set on Saturday too. And I fully agree with you - they are exactly the kind of band who might do that sort of thing! Lars had made a few comments about Riot Fest in his socials the last few years, and lord knows they have friends in the city (CM Punk).

And if they are on the bill? I also want to point out that I'm actually not convinced that an Operation Ivy cover set on Thursday would be entirely out of the question. A bit unlikely, but it would be a fun/funny way to address the hype... And would certainly qualify as a "bucket list" set.

Fully agreed here. Their music has aged pretty well, all things considered.

Bee-Gees cover set = Bucket list

Maybe the REAL secret Thursday band is the friends we made along the way

    I’ll see myself out

Hell even seeing Rancid play a couple Operation Ivy songs and then doing a typical set would be Bucket List to me.

Real Friends confi--oh wait, no. They're out.

Truth! I've seen them play "Knowledge" and "Sound System" over the years and it's been a blast each time. I could also see other people in attendance jumping on-stage to sing a song or two with them. Specifically, I'm thinking of Brendan Kelly but I'm sure there would be others. Hah.

Mind you, while this has a possibility of happening I don't think any of this has a strong possibility of happening. Hah.

If we're at 200K covid cases per day by Sept 1 like they're currently prediciting, I find it very hard to believe Riot is going to happen.

Wait, 200K per day? Not again, please :(

Although, tbh Im afraid Lollapalooza will be the reason cases go up again and the city closes again

    LOL

The closest I’ve ever seen was when I saw The Interrupters a few years back (before they got huge) open for Rancid. They played Sound System and Tim jumped out and made a surprise appearance for his part. It was pretty rad

Chevelle doesn’t have a Chicago date on their fall tour so…..

I've seen them do "Sound System," but not with Tim! That's pretty sweet. I saw them at RockFest in Montebello back before they were a "thing" and they covered it there too... Tim jumped on-stage for "Family" but not for "Sound System," which I remember being bummed about. Hah.

We'll see what happens. I'd rather enjoy the hope now than worry about something I have literally zero control over if it happens down the line. Hah. Mostly because if shit has to shut down again, the picture is pretty fucking bleak across the board.

Personally, I think we should be looking at hospitalizations and deaths instead of just cases. 200,000 cases where most people are just getting mild symptoms or 200,000 cases where lots of people are getting really sick and/or hospitals are being overcrowded? One would require restrictions in areas where there is a large portion of those people, the other would not require new restrictions, IMHO.

The same goes for 200 cases a day in Chicago. If these cases are just people getting mild symptoms, I see no reason for restrictions (and 200 cases a day in a city of millions is…not worth the scare over) but if they’re severe cases, putting restrictions in place in the areas of the city hardest hit would be smart.
