People still posting about Michael Jackson is…uncomfortable to me, especially when it’s an artist you like. This is disappointing.

I know this conversation has been had a billion times and i’m sure it’ll be had a billion times more but i dont think this should necessarily be the “disappointment” thread. Like, yeah, does it suck - maybe? But like, what accountability are we looking for from Chance here? Idk its just another example of what is this thread really for?

Its almost like hip hop has a toxic masculinity problem…but the fans of the genre don’t care, so I don’t really think there’s much accountability to be had.

That DaBaby video is fucking gross.

    Very sad dad

Sixnine and Chris Brown are still huge. Most don't care. It's sad shit.

I think this applies to almost every genre, not just hip-hop.

Replace hip-hop with pop-punk in this post and it works just as well, if not better

    Hip-hop is not the problem

Replace pop punk with metal or hardcore or country. It’s a music wide problem, not a genre specific problem.

I mean it’s ridiculous to say the problem is that the fans don’t care because we know what’s being insinuated...the fans of a predominantly black art form are mostly black, so of course it’s their fault that people aren’t being held accountable right? but you take a look at the people in white dominated genres who have done in many cases even worse shit and you’ll find way more fans not giving a shit. I mean I’ve found fans of hip-hop to be way more socially conscious than fans of like, metal (I love both genres to death). Everyone on Twitter right now is going off on the fucked up shit DaBaby did last night at rolling loud, for example. I just find it ridiculous to specifically call out the fans of a predominantly POC helmed genre, because you’re seemingly blaming a POC fan base when again those are the people I find being way more forward thinking about this than white dudes that listen to pop-punk

maybe not mainstream stuff but my point mainly is it’s an art form made by POC for POC. obviously it has garnered tons of white fans but when I think of who hip-hop is actually for, it ain’t us

Have you ever been to a hip hop show? Like a large mainstream hip hop artist? It’s white kids from the suburbs, it’s not POC from low income neighborhoods buying the $350 Travis tickets.

When Travis was on the Astroworld tour and they cancelled a date last minute, it was scores of white teen boys being the ones doing the “rioting”.

Hip hop IS pop culture, it drives our culture on almost every level on entertainment right now. Pop punk and it’s problematic members don’t get the same level of scrutiny because they aren’t a part of the pop culture discourse.

I’ve been to a ton of rap shows, some where it’s mostly white people and some where I was the only white person there, yes white people are basically price gouging POC out of their own culture I’m not sure what that has to do with what I said.

there’s a difference between pop culture and hip-hop culture, and while there is obvious cross over I would hardly say someone like Travis Scott represents the whole of the rap community and fan base, he’s a pop artist with a pop fan base which is different than a hip-hop fan base. there’s crossover like I said but the two aren’t necessarily the same and you seem to have a problem with pop music fans, which whatever I just don’t think it’s fair to throw an entire genres fan base under the bus when plenty of people do care and are trying to enact change.

I can assure you that black people still go to hip hop shows lol. What is going on in here? Hip hop absolutely has a homophobia and sexism problem, so does pop punk and metal and country and whatever. I think people are just side eying your posts bc you’ve said “those people” before, along with some other weirdly coded posts

Is it more of a fan engagement problem? I think people just in general.. don't really care as much. The larger culture is just NOT as progressive or engaged with those things as us on this forum or on Twitter are. We tend to think it's indicative of the way people think, but we are a microcosm of a microcosm.

Given the weird direction this conversation took, I think it's worth noting the progress made in the hip hop community over the past decade to begin addressing misogyny and homophobia and its ties to the music and culture. Difficult and still ongoing work that has almost exclusively been done by POC - particularly women.

Not intending to detract from specific calls for accountability, but I think it's important to acknowledge the progress (and where that credit is due).
