It came out during the height of people trying to tear Shyamalan down. Even though he said it was a B-movie before the film even came out, people decided to hold it to a different standard. Coincidentally, no one did this to Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez when Grindhouse came out just a year earlier.

It creates a weird situation. Do people really think "we only ate tiramisu, it meant nothing!" or the man's rant about how great hot dogs are were meant sincerely? Shyamalan is not a stupid man; he was at the top of his class and always has appeared thoughtful in interviews. There is a scene where a man sets up his lawnmower and then gets on the ground to be run over; of course Shyamalan knew that would be funny. It is one thing to not appreciate the tone he was going for or to think he did not do it well, but to deny that it was a B-movie with an intentional layer of comedy and cheesiness is a tremendous stretch. It would be like faulting the Schumacher Batman films for not being as serious as the Nolan ones or that the main characters in Starship Troopers are vapid and interchangeable; that was the intention all along.

It is really funny that Roger Ebert hated The Village but liked The Happening.

being deliberately bad doesn't preclude a movie from... actually just being really terrible

I'm a Shyamalan fan, I think even at his worst his movies will have something to recommend them, even it's just his (incredible) camerawork and cinematography. but man, The Happening and Lady in the Water just suck shit. there aren't even any good technical moments to appreciate, they're just anonymous, boring and stupid. I couldn't even bring myself to watch either more than once

if I want B-movie, schlocky Shyamalan, I'm going for The Visit (underrated), or if I'm feeling particularly spicy, Devil

Yeah see The Visit is actually him making a B movie, not him just saying he made one to try and convince people his bad movie was intentionally bad lol

I literally could not tell you a single thing about the content, composition or direction of that movie. complete and utter wash in every sense of the word. at the least I could tell you several things from The Happening - none of them would be good but the movie at least had some impact

and it's just a lot of fun. dumb but well made, the rhythm of that movie just sucks you in

I can't see this yet because Australia's government is incompetent, but it's a good time to revisit the Shyamalan movies I do love. watched The Sixth Sense for the first time in years

what amazes me is that there's nothing remotely scary in the first 50 minutes of that film, but it effortlessly becomes a horror in the third act and then swings back to a lowkey, very human drama for the finish. absolutely none of that should work but somehow it does. and, goes without saying, but Toni Colette's performance is just incredible

I don't have a lot of love for Lady in the Water but literally no one else could have made that movie, it is (for better or worse, and almost entirely worse) a singular film.

Here to add that I absolutely hated The Happening and thought it was terrible until people smarter than me on the internet pointed out it should be looked at like a B movie sci fi pic from the 50s and that made me absolutely love it. It fucking crushes that genre and so do all the acting performances in it. Wahlberg and Zoey felt like they had watched a lot of those movies and nailed the corniness down lol

Just came back from seeing this and enjoyed it quite a bit. Definitely liked it more than The Happening and The Visit.

The village is my second fav of his, next to sixth sense. I had no idea how The Village was criticized until now.

The village is 100% my favorite and it definitely just fell victim to marketing in my opinion.

movie was at its heart a love story and it was marketed as a pure horror movie.
