Hahaha

 

There's some really good filmmaking going on here, and some really empty storytelling. It's a sort of Inarritu/J.J. Abrams issue I have where it's so drenched in tribute to the great works it draws from, and so clearly and brashly exhibiting behind-the-camera talent, but it has nothing to say and isn't staking out any new or interesting ground. I'm not far into it and I want to like it, there's very clear talent that's gone into it and even critics I've seen who have similar issues with it gush over how purely entertaining it is, but I'm not even getting that from it. I'm bored watching it and it won't be easy to convince myself to ride it out to the end. But that might be more my issue than the show's. While they both practically beat you over the head with their influences, this is not as hollow or heavily misguided as something like Super 8, but it's not utilizing those stylistic and tonal tributes to do something fresh and exciting like a Tarantino film or even a show like Community. Maybe it's just my mindset, I really want this to be good. I'll give it some time and maybe try and start fresh from the beginning in a few weeks or something.

I loved this show. It gave me the wonderful feeling Lost gave me when I watched it, except this only takes up a day of my life and has a chance at being coherent when all is said and done. So it's basically perfect.

Also, it says a lot that I have complete confidence in the writers and cast for Season 2. A lot of people I've talked to said they don't want to see them mess up a good thing, but I just don't think that'll happen. Worst-case scenario, I don't think a lesser Season 2 can do anything to detract from the flawlessness of Season 1.

 

I finished this weeks ago and loved it.

Honestly though, Barb is the worst.

He's a standard archetype, my favorite would be Sam from Freaks and Geeks but there's tons of examples

 

Just shows how great the casting/directing/production is when multiple characters can be related to characters from REAL 80's classics.

watching through this right now, on episode 7 (and not reading any of this thread, so if you answer, plz quote me), but my one question is

How did Hooper figure out/discover a connection between everything and Terry Ives? What led him to be looking up articles about MKUltra in the library? I probably missed it, but could use a refresher[/spoilers]

 

I mean he's chief of police so his powers of deduction/knowing where to look are probably on point. The show established that much, at least.

 

Just finished. Was about to make an angry post about a second season being forced and how Netflix can't just leave shows alone, but then that thing happened in the bathroom and I'm satisfied.


Also, it's kinda strange that things (hehe) are "normal" at the end, despite the newspaper article at the end talking about how Joyce publicly claimed that Will was a victim of government testing

 

He was looking up stuff about the lab once he found the connection to the vent/11's torn clothes, that led to MK Ultra and then Terry Ives.
