    It will be.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Official Website

The next generation edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will release as a standalone purchase for PC, Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, as well as a free update for everyone who already owns the game on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

It’s taken less in the past to convince me to play Witcher 3 again. That game is comfort food.

It's kind of funny, in Doom Eternal, you literally go through hell, and yet I never got the same chills as when I first went through an Oblivion gate, that feeling of awe and dread admiring the artistry of the hellish area that's probably about to kick your ass. I just got those same chills first entering the demon world in Darksiders 2, surrounded by lava and seeing a black hole in the sky.

This got me thinking, what are some of your favorite, most memorable settings in video games? Try being a little more specific than Rapture or Columbia that are basically the entire game. Ravenholm in Half Life 2 comes to mind. Just recently I was also blown away by Clockwork Mansion and Stilton Manor in Dishonored 2

To pick one that is similar to the Oblivion gates: in Fable 3, you end up having to go through this darkness (I don’t remember the name) that was threatening the world (I think, it’s been a while) and that was pretty impactful I thought at the time.

Xenoblade 2 had a lot of areas that really blew me away just because they were so pretty and creative.

Dark Souls had a lot of areas that just gave me a bad feeling as soon as I stepped in, which was actually a good thing in that case.

The little Jump Up Superstar 2D segment in Mario Oddysey almost made me cry, though maybe that is a different thing as it’s not an area.

Absolutely skip Cyberpunk, yes, but if one is a fan of RPG’s then Witcher 3 is probably the pinnacle of the genre.

Witcher 3 is a really good game with some truly great moments but calling it the pinnacle of RPGs is too wild for me

Lots of areas from Bloodborne come to mind, but Fishing Hamlet stands out as the most memorable.

The quantum moon from Outer Wilds is probably the most awe inspiring area I've seen in a video game

Open world RPGs i’d say I would agree probably.

  13. Yeah it’s the pinnacle in terms of open world RPGs for me.

I still haven’t played Witcher 3 despite fantasy RPGs being very much my shit. I’ve owned the GOTY for a few years now, but now I’m waiting for that next gen update before I dive in.

I played it all on the Switch, the jump to PS5 is going to be splendid.

Witcher 3 has a solid learning curve that makes a lot of the combat and progress more fulfilling. Its not extremely hard, well depending on difficulty settings, but I just remember having to git gud at least a little bit at the start. The combat has its own rhythm. Any other open world RPG I feel like I master the controls in the first hour.

Excited about playing it finally. The next gen update will be the perfect time. Is there a combat system you’d compare it to?

New Vegas for me is the best Western RPG. W3 is more polished but NV has more heart.

  19. NV is definitely top three for me. Divinity would be up there too

Hmmm the only thing I can come up with is its like easy mode soulsborne combat. Fantastic story too though, theres a big event in the latter half of the game that was so damn compelling and fun.

    Fuck that game

i need to play NV still, ive only played FO4 and loved that.

You should then because it and 3 > 4

  23. I love 4 a lot but I’d definitely say 3 and NV are better to me.

  24. Fallout 4, Witcher 3, and Dragon Age: Inquisition are the pinnacle of western open world RPGs for me. I do love Mass Effect 2 but it just doesn't feel as open-world-y. I've probably spent more time in Skyrim than any of these, though, haha
