Very surprised that only 2 of those that were mentioned made it. Frozen Soul better be on there.

I'm 37 and still have tons of glaring omissions. I think I'm gonna do a deep dive on 90s death metal soon and at least clear all those ones up.

I took a deep dive into the classics a few years ago. There was a list of the essentials on the metal subreddit that I went through, and it covered the bases pretty damn well. From there I was able to determine whether or not I wanted to check out the rest of a given band's discography or if they were simply a one or two listen kind of band for me.

I'll have to find the list. I actually had a thread on here somewhere (I was still doing the list when the transition to Chorus happened). It was a fun project and formulated the foundations for what genres I tend to favor these days.

I remember following that thread actually! Was just thinking of it when I made this post. Really does go to show the mammoth breadth of this genre that even such a lengthy, concerted, focused project still only covered "the basics" as it were.

  6. That's an interesting topic. I'm kinda in the same boat as I think I've barely heard any classics. Contrary to how I or other metalheads used to make me feel like a decade or so ago, I don't really feel like I necessarily have to catch up. At this point, I pretty much know what subgenres I like or not and in either case, which older or newer acts I gravitate towards. Doesn't mean I'm not going to bother with unheard classics ever, but I'd rather do that at my own organic pace, much like I've done for non-metal genres, than force myself to listen to tons of stuff out of pressure, all while knowing from past experiences that I may not get into them. Not sure if that makes sense, I kinda have mixed feelings due to witnessing tons of gatekeeping on various metal places, thankfully not in this thread though.

the only metal band i think everyone should force themselves to get into is celtic frost, other than that i'm a big fan of exploring the subgenre you like and encountering the classics as organically as possible

Gatekeeping is whack. It's actually in response to gatekeeping that somewhere down the line I made it a point to develop an encyclopedic knowledge of the genre as much as possible so I can school the gatekeepers when questioned on my metal knowledge (which happens pretty often). That said, I also do just have a genuine interest in trying to hear everything as much as possible because I'm just that invested in this genre - I live and breathe this shit anymore.

I was inspired by Dye Hard With a Vengeance on Instagram and decided to dye some old shirts this past weekend. They came out better than expected since I had no idea what I was doing really, but the ink kinda bleed onto the lettering on the Gatecreeper and Ekulu ones.
