New Found Glory was my favorite band for a decade or more, but I haven't liked anything they've done since Steve left the band, outside of the newest From Your Screen EP. Steve doesn't deserve a platform, so I'm certainly not saying I miss him. The band is just an unfortunate casualty to me. I've also grown increasingly weary of Chad over the years.

Hard looking at the band the same way in light of all that. I did see them a couple of years ago and it was a ton of fun, but it was more a nostalgia trip than anything.

 

I think there are a number of people who share similar feelings. Losing a member can have an impact on the band, but sometimes people just gotta go. Band was strongest as a five piece in terms of writing and it’s been hard to recapture certain elements of that success. I’ve liked some songs and records since, so maybe I’m a little different that way, but the last Screen To Stereo did remind me of them at their NFG peak.

 

Especially in one specific song.

Excited to hear this. Kinda bummed that they're just putting out a Deluxe version of a weak album instead of putting out a new EP, but I get it. Without touring that album kinda crashed and burned, so I guess they're hoping the upcoming tour will help promote this "new" album more and give it life.

Am I remembering correctly that all these new songs are done with a different producer?

 

I thought someone mentioned Will Pugh but I could be wrong. I wonder if they rework any existing song from to album like they have before.

I'm always down for some new music. I'll for sure give it a shot.

 

There are a few songs from the Makes Me Sick sessions they never released...here's hoping NFG releases a massive b-sides collection someday.

 

Just realised i've not really been into any NFG release for ten years now, since Radiosurgery. I'm not sure if it's me growing out of that kind of pop-punk, or if their output in the last decade just hasn't done it for me.

so, uh, why couldn't more of the Infinty X X Forever smily face album be like The last Red Eye? I *really* like it.

 

it's been almost a year and i have to say this is the first time i think NFG had a misstep in their entire career. I always tell my best friend how i think the NFG train is PERFECT. They do everything just so well. Tours go in order from 1) album tours 2) new album 3) pop punk nostalgia tour 4) covers album 5) new album tour 6) another string of album tours 7) pop punk nostalgia tour

and the albums have all kinda made sense. Ressureection was a bit 'harder', make me sick was more 'pop'...it all worked. And then they did another screen to stereo which are always a blast.

But this felt odd. The album felt unnecessary and rushed. It's the first time where i wish NFG didn't release stuff on a yearly/2year basis. Take a break. Let your humongous, impressive disocgrophy simmer a little bit. Weezer releases stuff every year because 99% of it is bad/unmemorable and they hope something sticks. NFG doesn't need to do that.

It's fine. Every band gets a mulligan. NFG has earned MANY mulligans honestly.

 

Forever and Ever is like NFG trying to write the most NFG album instead of just letting the songwriting process naturally evolve, like Makes Me Sick.

 

Never had a misstep?? Many people would agree that their last several albums have been bad.

 

Well they're wrong

 

I still say Radiosurgery was their biggest misstep.

 

Biggest misstep was probably Coming Home (even though it’s my favorite, it nuked them commercially)

 

2006 was also just a weird time for pop punk

 

How so

 

A lot of people talk about Coming Home as being like a passion project of the band, at the cost of their career trajectory because it strayed from pop punk. But I actually think it's the opposite. I feel like the change in sound was kinda pushed on them by Geffen, as the music scene at the time was shifting away from upbeat pop punk and more towards a gloomy/sad sound.
It was 2006, Dashboard Confessional was the biggest thing at the time, with Stolen entering the top 40 and selling out arenas like Madison Square Garden. The next big rock act that came that year was The Fray, who had 2 top 10 songs. Augustana, Snow Patrol and Lifehouse had huge hits that year with their slow ballady songs, and All American Reject's song Move Along was huge, which was kinda like a more mature sounding style of pop punk.

I feel like Coming Home wasnt like the band doing what they want, it was the label's attempt to make them stay relevant. Even their aesthetic changed for that album cycle, they were all wearing v neck sweaters with collared shirts, they stopped dying their hair. I actually think the album didnt do that well because it had the NFG name attached to it, and not because it was missing the pop punk sound. People were growing out of the pop punk sound and thats what they expected from another NFG album.

 

Coming Home was fine, it definitely felt like it got no real push from the label though.

 

Several of the guys got married around when Coming Home came out, too, right? Always seemed to me like after three successful and very pop-punk albums, they decided to try a more mature sound...likely a convergence of many factors, some already mentioned above.
