Lol I'd argue it. Chase This Light had almost unarguably the poppiest singles of any JEW record

I think I underrated Invented. I listened to it on my run just now and a lot of those songs are fantastic. And the production/instrumentation is stunning. One of my favorite sounding records, period.

Hey now. Look at you. Way cool.

Still baffles me that people don't get how Static could be considered one of their best albums. I mean it is and always has been right up there in the running with their other albums. It's way better than CTL and Invented I think. It's a well-regarded album, yet on this site it seems to be seen as the best-forgotten early work like Thrice's Identity Crisis or something. Static has some of the band's most creative and mature works to date. I've never seen that brought into question other than on this site.

Anyway, rant over, everyone's entitled to their own opinions etc., but if/when I rank JEW's songs, you can bet that Static songs will occupy a healthy portion of the top 10 list, with Anderson Mesa probably neck and neck with Disintegration for first place.

Totally agree. The fact that it's their lowest-scored album on Metacritic is insane to me.

I definitely underrated that album when it first came out. I don't know why I did, I just didn't "get" it immediately. Took a while before I went back to it, but after I did (a little more mature than 6 years ago when it came out) I realized how stellar it is.

Again, I still listen to it. But when you can choose to listen to music you do resonate with, why would you not? The point isn't Invented is bad, it's that I just don't enjoy it as much as the majority of their material. I still have some enjoyment, but it is surface level. And as I said earlier lyrics>music. So lyrics are incredibly important to me.

That's fair enough. I guess I just don't care about lyrics as much as you do because, as I said, I wouldn't listen to much music if I only listened to stuff I could relate to.

Edit: "Don't care" is probably the wrong way to put it. I guess what I mean is I can enjoy lyrics that I can't relate to just as much as lyrics I can relate to.

You can still be moved and impressed by lyrics without relating to them.

i was just thinking while walking to work today that jim really grew as a lyricist on invented imo. the detail that he managed to fit into those songs (i will forever love the "houston street" lyric) is super impressive

It's weird too, because that album came out at a pretty important time in my life and I have a ton of memories of listening to it that fall. It seems like the kind of record that should be an all-time favorite for me. I mean, shit, it probably would be if it came from any other band. I just also tend to think JEW has made three or four records that are as good or better, which is nuts in and of itself.

This is true, but I think you have to realize that everyone listens to music differently. Lyrical relatability is more important to some people than others. There's plenty of music that I like and respect but don't love because it doesn't really speak to anything I have experienced personally. It's just not really something you can control.

Relatability is less important to me now that it used to be, but if an album comes along and feels like it reflects exactly what I'm going through at a certain period of my life, I'm definitely still going to love it more than something that didn't have that same effect on me personally.

I just love witnessing everyone talking about how much they love this band, I think thats such a special thing and it's what encouraged me to really dive into their material. And i mean, they are well on their way to becoming a top 5 band for me and in time I don't think it's ridiculous to say that they could replace Brand New as my favorite.

    Keep being awesome, y'all

    Word.

There are totally exceptions. Sometimes I will really enjoy a song that I couldn't possibly relate to, or just not click with but will really like them. I can't think of an example off the top of my head. Oops haha, but I know it happens. But more often than not, I tend to jam music that I can relate or at least resonate with in some way. It ties the lyrics into my own personal experience and memories and emotions. It's what makes music such a powerful thing to me.

I remember when the lyrics to "23" really hit me, unfortunately I was already almost 26

All in on the new single.

I don't deserve more JEW. I haven't lived a good enough life. I haven't been a good enough man. But they keep giving.

I got Invented while visiting Australia and it was just wonderful. Still associate a lot of that album to a lot of those times.

Was never really a fan of these guys other than the singles from Bleed American, but I really liked these two new songs so I listened to all of Bleed American again and it really grabbed me this time. I want to dive into their discography but I'm not sure where to go from here. Any advice?

half the reason i think heart is hard to find is the best song theyve written is the lyrics. he fits a lot of detail without being overly wordy about it. paints a vivid picture with simplicity. it's extremely impressive.

similarly, you can be moved by the music and not the lyrics. i mean, im moved regularly by instrumental music. i see lyrics as just another element, not the defining element, of my enjoyment of something.

Well, if you ask me, since you just listened to BA, I'd just continue chronologically from there. Futures -> Chase This Light -> Invented -> Damage. Some people will hate me for not saying to go back to Clarity, but that's what I'd do.
