I think when I'm done with my song rankings I'm going to do some cross country style scoring to determine my ultimate album ranking. Get ready folks.

I tried listening to Invented again this past week. Still mediocre to me. It's not bad by any real means. It just doesn't connect to me in any substantial way. It's just kind of there.

Damage hit me right away and still connects with me today. Very heavy album emotionally. I can't listen to it all the time, but when I'm in a certain mood it is just perfect.

Haha remember when Christian Bale flipped shit on the Terminator set? If you don't know what I'm talking about, YouTube it. It's amazing haha

i've heard as much about damage but I haven't listened since it first came out and don't think I've ever given it the time. then again I've never loved a JEW album at release haha I'm always super late.

OH DAMN yeah I thought you meant Bane :crylaugh:

Clarity/BA/Futures/Damage hit right away for me. CTL has always been middling to me. Esp when compared to the four albums I listed. Invented still has not hit, not sure if it will. But it will always be a part of my full discography listens.

See, I have zero interest in out right ranking, but if there was a bracket I would do it. Cause then it's just song vs song rather than song vs all other songs.

I don't understand how anyone can enjoy Jimmy Eat World but not like Invented. That album basically sounds like a mix of all their albums up to that point and it's great. Songs like "Movielike", "Stop", "Cut", "Invented" and "Mixtape" are all top tier JEW songs.

As much as I enjoy Damage, I can understand why some wouldn't like it. It's pretty different from their other stuff.

Damage was perfect for me given the time it came out. I thought it was a perfect summer album. I don't think there are any bad songs on it and I really dug the production they were going for. Pretty good for a great band trying something new.

Invented is probably my least liked album but the song "mixtape" is one of my favourite songs.

And very few lyrics hit me on that album for me. Musically, you're totally right. It's not super different or anything sonically. Which is why I can still listen to it at times and not actually hate it, but it becomes more passive listening, where with the majority of their stuff I actively listen and engage with the lyrics. Make sense?

I went camping a few summers ago and listened to Damage on CD around a campfire. What a fantastic night that was.

Meh. I think the lyrics on Invented are some of their best.

I remember watching that and being like "no one will ever want to work with him again" but I stand corrected dudes still successful

Clarity was immediate and my favourite JEW album but I only listened to it a few years ago. BA and Futures, for some reason I only listened to the singles initially but ended up falling in love with the full albums. They have such a dense back catalog that I've been spending so much time with each record before moving onto the next.

I'm not really judging how well they are written, more about a personal and emotional reaction to them. Like, if I read something at face value I can go "oh, I see, that's a clever turn of phrase or interesting insight". But if I can't resonate with it? It's just not for me. You get me?

The vocals and vocal melodies are the think that makes this band work for me or not and on Invented they just pop a lot less to me. Very few melodies on there really excite or interest me and most of the chorus' sound a bit flat. "My Best Theory" is kind of an exception to that which is why it's my favourite. Also like Greg the lyrics don't really do much for me. There's the odd line I like but for the most part they're just there.

Yeah musically I think Invented is JEWs best but some of the lyrics don't hit me as hard. But when they do they're among the best.

Listened to Damage at work and yep it's still a stellar piece of music. Please Say No tho

I mean, while it was unprofessional, it does show his passion and drive. I can see why people would want someone like that, assuming those outbursts are rare.

Yeah that's what got me was just how unprofessional it was but if he's that passionate about it I totally get why directors and execs could look past it.

I can't believe we're getting albums from Yellowcard and Jimmy Eat World, two defining acts for a lot of us, this year and so soon.

It's probably safe to assume that kind of outburst is rare. If not, I would assume he would probably be overlooked more and not get as many roles. Or maybe they aren't rare but people just like him anyway. I dunno.

It's really really good. Check it out and come to the YC thread to discuss it. A lot of fans don't like it

Kind of late to the conversation but I do want to say - Chase This Light had (almost unarguably) the best singles of any JEW record

Not really. If I only listened to albums with lyrics that perfectly resonated with me at just the right moment in my life, I wouldn't be listening to much music at all. Sufjan Stevens' Carrie & Lowell is one of my favourite albums but I can't relate with the lyrics as I'm fortunate enough to have not experienced what Sufjan is singing about on that record. Lots of my favourite artists have lyrics that are miles away from anything I've ever experienced but I can still enjoy the songs because of all the other elements that go into it. Although, it is of course possible to enjoy lyrics that you can't relate with, as I do with most of the music I listen to.
