I recently transferred schools and our class' most prominent Trump supporter (giant idiot who is despised by everyone, constantly starts facebook political arguments, always likes ALL of his posts and comments [as no one else does]) started an argument on why we should ban Muslim immigrants *temporarily until we can improve the vetting process* last night. After I pointed out all the logistical reasons why it was costly and improper, logical reasons as to why it would have a counterintuitive effect on ISIS, and statistical reasons why it's completely unnecessary, I was able to sign off with a "and now that I'm not subject to the law school's honor code, I can freely tell you: you're just a fucking dip shit."

Felt good. That can be an anecdote or a piece of advice: you choose -_-

Qdoba is far more ethical as well. I know there's a debate on the left whether it's moral to patronize any chain on the basis of comparative ethics, but I do.

Before diving into that link, I assumed that man's name was either Red, Roy, or Joe. At least I got one right.

At some point, the media has got to stop giving the right wing domestic terrorism element in this country a pass and call it out for what it really is. It's fucking scary to me, like these are the actual terrorists that I need to worry about because they possess the statistically highest chance of me getting harmed by them. However, the media would rather continue on the Muslim = terrorist path, which they also should be called out for cultivating and perpetuating over the past 15 years, then to call a dude like this out on his actions and give him the title that fits him best.

I find it incredibly difficult agreeing with this kind of rhetoric as I believe it's ultimately condescending, and hypocritical. I need to lay out a couple of things that I've been holding off on saying for some time now on here, but I feel it needs to be said for people to understand where many people like myself would be coming from.

I really don't appreciate the response of "what". I merely asked "who", as, much like others, they're people. This comes across as dismissive and passive aggressive.

Anthony, I know you literally posted on here "Christian would kill LGTBAQI people if they could get away with it," While it may seem unfair to bring up another post, it's relevant because of how you're responding in here as well. If that statement was said about any other group, it wouldn't have gotten a pass. But I get it. I'm very, very well aware of what the Christian right in the US and other countries are doing, and have done, for a long time towards women, LGBT and POC and even other religious groups. Even conflict between different denominations of Christianity has happened. I'm not defending it or thinking it's OK in any capacity, and you will never see me do so. I'm not an apologist or justifying any of it. I'm also well aware of both past and currently increasing antisemitism and anti-Muslim bigotry in the West. I don't like it just as much as the rest of you don't, and will stand against that too.

I don't give people like Bachmann, Carson, and Cruz a pass. I ridicule them as I would any other narrow minded, ignorant person, religious or not. I realize where and how Christianity holds power, and to oppress people. I agree with you, and also think it's wrong and harmful. I also realize many of you on here, particularly from the US, have probably come from conservative Christian families. Thus you have not felt like you could be open to them about your identity and/or your politics. I completely 100% empathize with this.

Discussing religion shouldn't be a this vs that, this religion vs the other, this group vs that group. I'm pretty tired of that happening so often. Conversations are constantly being directed towards "OK but what about Christianity?" as if Christianity was ever being defended, let alone mentioned, when it wasn't. Bigotry or generalization in any direction shouldn't really be accepted here. It's not the right way to go about the discussion. It's not a competition. Making it so increases hostility and animosity. Richter, you yourself even recently posted about the Lebanese Christian family that were targeted. You realize this. So-called Christian privilege didn't apply to them and doesn't to people like them.

I'm not a "straight white male" and don't fit into the evangelical vote. In fact, I wouldn't even really call myself particularly 'religious'. I'm not a 'practicing' Christian. The last time I went to church was because my now ex boyfriend wanted me to, and his wanting to go every Sunday (I only went when I was in his town, which was a few times) wasn't something that aligned with me at all.

Religion is something that transcends gender identity, race, ethnicity, and sexuality. I am one of these people. I'm very much a minority. Christianity is not a monolith, and every Christian practices differently. We emphasize this for minority Jews, Sikhs, Muslims, Buddhists, and so forth here for incredibly valid and well intended reasons against bigoted and ignorant people, with many of those people actually being Christian or using Christianity as a means to act that way. But I see no fair reason for why we should speak about Christians broadly as a result or a response, especially when they come from lesser known backgrounds or otherwise are a minority in multiple other aspects.

Many people have suffered under severe oppression for decades, even centuries, especially ethnic minorities facing genocide time and time again, simply for being Christian. You could respond and say "what about other religion/race and what Christianity has done to other race/religion." Well, here's the thing. Once again. I'm not defending anything Christianity has done that has been oppressive and violent. I never have and never will. I find it deplorable as anyone should. So it's not about that. It's about how people ignore the complete opposite happening, and find it acceptable to generalize anyway. People struggle to reconcile with their faith (whatever it may be) and other parts of themselves (gender identity/sexuality especially) all the time and I don't see how this helps that.

When you come from a race in the single digit millions constantly being attacked and oppressed simply for their faith, and you see people on Twitter say they didn't realize your race still existed, you don't really appreciate the way certain discussions are usually had. Maybe it's not likely you can relate to those experiences, but it's exactly why I'm addressing this.

Again, I fully understand discussing this in a Western context considering I've lived in both Europe and North America and am seeing the hypocrisy and problems with the right every day. We can discuss the ignorance and bigotry of the right, particularly the religious right, and how that is affecting Western society, in a manner that isn't like this - hostile, generalizing, and obliviously erasing people. This is something we as socially liberal and progressive people are not wanting to do and are rightly against.

Even as someone that wouldn't really call themselves very religious, I can't help but wince at the way people post on here regarding this sometimes. Especially as I reflect upon my background and identity and many, many others like me. And I would like for us to be able to change the way we discuss this and be aware of why that needs to happen.

To be very frank, I addressed what I was referring to earlier and apologized for not being clearer about my comment initially. On top of that, I actually regret posting that little bit you tried to hang over my head there. I posted that drunk out of my mind, at a time in my life was falling apart due to my alcoholism and I lashed out in regrettable ways. That was one of them and I wish I never posted that in hindsight.

How can we make this thread more open for women and other folks? There's a set of regulars that post in here, and I often think that our posts can be alienating at times, so I'm trying to figure out how to bear be sensitive to that and get a more inclusive politics thread.

And this is why I will never vote for a democrat in any situation or at any point. One wonders why we are cynical about the democrats, here is an answer. Now tell me again that they're our best option:

For smiling, listening and doing nothing? No thanks.

Edit: I like how "anti-black racism" is put in quotes. The party is racist. Not overtly. They have discretion with their racism.

Tbf apparently there's a second page that does state that African Americans do experience daily discrimination, according to the smoking gun story

Well, you can't really "deny" that racism exists because you see it every day! If someone is denying it, they have mental issues.

Okay? But, that they cannot offer up support for any policy is precisely why they're actually useless. I did not expect them to, but, to me, the memo is demonstrative of the way democrats approach movements for black liberation; that is, placating them, but not offering any actual support because it is not in their interests to do so.

    Liberated from what, exactly?

    Serious question.

Also, what type of support would one expect? And how long does the support last before the Man says "ok, you're on your own."?

White supremacist capitalism, heteropatriarchy and its institutional presence throughout our lives as evidenced by economic inequality, infant mortality, unequal treatment by medical professionals, state sponsored murder, access to good educations, unfettered capitalism by way of using devastated communities as Guinea pigs for economic experimentation and so on and so forth.
