GCH came out as I was getting into more alternative and indie hip hop, so they piqued my interest more than others. But I got bored of The Papercut Chronicles pretty quickly and everything they did after didn’t interest me at all.

Can see why they’d be a gateway act for pop punk kids to get into hip hop.

Travie also introduced Tyga to the world, probably the worst thing he did hah

Their second-to-last album was probably the closest they came to bridging to the broader hip-hop world. Busta Rhymes and The-Dream features, Cool & Dre production.

Yeah, The Quilt was possibly my favorite in retrospect.

  5. Papercut Chronicles had some cool stuff, the pivot to much poppier stuff afterward lost me very quickly though. It was really cool that FBR was putting them on like that but most of the Warped Tour type people I knew didn’t so much use GCH as a launchpad into hip hop as much they tokenized them so they could be like “yeah I like rap” haha

oh TOTALLY, that happened a lot with what you are saying. I guess more for me personally, they were one of the groups or artists who early on had me realize that I did like hip hop and wanted to get deeper into it. But yeah, plenty of people used them in the same was as "I have a black friend"

I had to Google him to find out who he was. I'm know who GCH are but they somehow pretty much missed me.

I agree with Steve though, there should be more full band hip hop groups and live bands performing at hip hop shows in general.

I disagree with the latter. I feel like live bands have become very common with rap artists that are actually known for being good live (so not a random hot random rapper that raps along to his own vocals) and almost every time I see one I catch myself thinking “this is cool but I kinda wish he would rap over the actual beat”, especially when the beats are classics in their own right.

what was the bad rabbits considered?
I remember liking them as a bridge to hip hop/funk I think.

I thought the Kendrick shows with a live band when he was touring around GKMC were just awful. Honestly just sounded like some rap rock lol. Can’t think if I’ve seen any others off the top of my head.

Would have loved to have seen some of the TPAB material with a band though. I saw him a few months after it came out but it was a festival and the set was basically the exact same as the Yeezus tour with one or two of the singles added in.

  12. I think there are enough rappers with live bands tbh. Like @The Lucky Moose is saying there are a lot of artists that don’t really pull it off as well as they would just rapping over the beat track. But I do agree with @irthesteve that it would be cool if more full band hip hop groups existed. You can kinda get that sensation with the occasional collab record but I feel like that’s a bit different than hearing a group of like 4-6 people grow as artists and songwriters together over multiple records

Gym Class Heroes were definitely a pop punk to rap/rnb crossover act for me.

Bad Rabbits were, and still are, really great. They just seem to be the poster kids for label issues so they feels consistently stalled on new music. Definitely more R&B than rap though

As someone who's only done hip hop shows with a live band, its definitely harder from a recording and logistics perspective, so I get why most people don't want to bother. A lot of times established acts with money bring out a live band and I it works about half the time. A band can really bring out an added dimension in some songs, but also they can just feel like added noise that distract from the beat. Really depends on the rapper and the music and the people they find.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

the new Genesis Owusu album has a full band on most of the songs, and it's fuckin fantastic

You listened to the Ruby Yacht album? It’s R.A.P. Ferreira’s crew with the Jefferson Park Boys and a few others. It’s really good.

he's a Ghanian singer-rapper who grew up in Australia, he's been making some serious waves here over the last year with his singles but his first album is truly great. manages to effortlessly mix hip-hop, funk, R&B and even some punk rap with a full band and Genesis is just an amazing performer. highly recommend to Gorillaz/Gambino/Prince fans
