My elementary school music teacher made us watch the original Grease so many times. We only watched that and the first half hour of The Wiz.

The King of Comedy and Rocky III would probably round out my top five. Blade Runner is very easily my favourite of the year though, just adore that movie.

If you saw the movie with “Cool Rider”, “Man For all Seasons”, “Reproduction” and “We’re Gonna Score Tonight”, you’d know it fucking rules

 

Anyway, a person’s Halloween III ranking placement in the series is a solid way to know if I should care what they have to say about horror

Should’ve moved King of Comedy into 1983 (its US release year). Would’ve been a landslide.

 

yeah 1983 is looking like possibly the weakest year for me since we started this.

 

I debated how to do release dates when I started this. When I do top tens for current years, I go with American releases, as most critics do, since that is when people can see the movie. With movies from decades ago, though, it made less sense, especially when you get films like Killer of Sheep which is only ever officially "released" thirty years later.

1983 does look really weak. Videodrome is great but I don't know if it is popular enough.

 

This will definitely start to become more of an "issue" (not that it makes much difference really) when we get into years that people actually remember films being released. Picking a random example, something like First Cow that was premiered in a few film festivals in 2019, but outside of the that, vast majority of people didn't see it until it got a wider release in 2020. If you go by Letterboxd, it's a 2019 film, but in reality it'll feel like a 2020 film to most.

Hard to say really what year it belongs too - but again, it probably doesn't matter too much in the bigger picture.

 

Loads of great stuff in 83 for me! One of the strongest 80s years personally from a quick scan.

Yeah a lot of my more recent lists have films a year later because of the UK releases often taking a while for some reason.

 

I have 3 I love for 83 but they probably wouldn't crack my top 3 for most years. I'm checking out some new stuff now to see if I find anything new.

 

I’ve been wondering how we are going to handle the release year issue. I always think that premiere date is the way to go, otherwise it often excludes many incredible films that don’t get picked up for distribution. Or you end up with a situation like when Rohmer’s A Summer’s Tale (1996) finally got a belated release stateside and ended up on best of the year lists in 2014.

 

83 is looking like the best of the decade yet for me. A quick scan and it looks like I’ll have to narrow down from at least 10 films.

 

A lot of times that is because a film will come out in one theater in Los Angeles on New Year's Eve to technically qualify for awards. We haven't seen them either.
