Stupid rumor for at least the 2021 models, who knows down the line. I personally do not understand the move, break compatibility for a bunch of stuff, makes things like accessories more expensive for the end user etc. I guess it’s part of the reason they didn’t move to USB-C/USB 4.0, Apple makes a killing licensing out the lighting cable to 3rd parties, it’s not a cash cow they’d turn away.
I don’t get the IP rating thing either, my iPhone X gets sprayed with water all the time when walking in the rain, doing dishes, hanging out by a pool or something in the summer and it’s still fine. I don’t need to deep sea dive with a bare iPhone or w/e shit they think of that’s useless for 99% of the population.

I definitely get the argument that “well it can’t be the lightning port forever and ever” sure of course, but I’d like a more complete and potent solution than the MagSafe as of today. But I’m also still a crazy person who hooks up their phone to a computer once in a blue moon.

 

Dude Dolby Atmos is a total letdown imo. It literally just makes the volume way quieter for me… I have to crank my volume literally about 50% higher to get about the same sound, and then maybe it sounds *slightly* more “spacious” then before??

Also some albums I noticed only have some songs supporting Atmos currently… so basically if I were to use this I’d have to constantly keep my eye on the volume level to not blow my eardrums out when the album moves to a non-Atmos track. Thank god they’re not charging extra for this because that would be an absolute joke imo

 

I think it's song by song and whether or not there was a proper mix done in Dolby. Like @phaynes12 said, Tom Sawyer sounds fantastic. I'm listening to Come Together right now and it's blowing me away.

 

Not sure what you are talking about. My volume is where it normally is and it’s fine. Listening to the new Gojira and it sounds good.

 

Is the volume way quieter compared to normal songs for you also, or is it just on my headphones? I’m using AirPods Pro. That’s the main thing I’ve consistently noticed tbh. It just makes me nervous if I’m like on a playlist that has a mix of Atmos and non-Atmos tracks that I’m gonna give myself some serious hearing damage when a non-Atmos track comes on.

 

Using AirPod Pros and it’s fine.

 

I'm listening on AirPods Max and it's maybe a 20-25% difference in perceived volume? Noticeable for sure.

 

Alright I’m trying this out on The Weeknd’s “After Hours” album now since he’s one of the main artists they’re featuring for it. I’m still definitely not at the “blown away” stage yet but I’m starting to hear some new details. The volume thing is still pretty weird for me though.

 

Ok I was partly wrong this is pretty cool depending on the album lol. “After Hours” is a good one for it, you really hear more details in the mix and the music surrounds you in a cool way. The volume issue still makes me VERY nervous though haha

 

Okay, Kanye’s “Black Skinhead” is pretty incredible in this format. Same with After Hours after sitting with it. I just gotta find more releases that are really utilized well with the format I guess.

Just to double check, if I’m using Bluetooth headphones on my iPhone there’s no point in turning on lossless there, right? Tried lossless with Dolby Atmos on my MacBook with good over-ear headphones and it was pretty sick.

 

Yeah, they state in the FAQ that lossless doesn't work over bluetooth so I'm going to test it out tonight using the 3.5mm headphone jack and some apple earphones I haven't used since getting airpods. I know headphones would obviously sound much better but I've got all the stuff here anyway haha

probably not getting the full hi-res lossless quality over bluetooth with my AirPods Pro and AirPods Max but I can definitely tell a quality difference between a lossless Apple Music track and a non-lossless Apple Music track
