    1. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis: Bold as Love
    2. The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Undergound & Nico
    3. Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You

What are some of the forgotten gems from the year? What is overrated? What did you discover at a young age and what did you discover later?

I’m gonna spend the most time I’ve ever spent with The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. And also going to use this entire project as my motivation to finally do a great run through of Pink Floyd. A band I have always enjoyed but never done a deep dive into.

currently listening to “interstellar overdrive”, a song I’ve heard Pearl Jam cover live more times than I’ve actually heard the original. So I’m off to a good start.

    yay psychedelia !

    1. Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved a Man The Way I Love You
    2. The Supremes - The Supremes Sing Motown
    3. Nina Simone - Sings The Blues

Very unlucky for Sgt Pepper to miss the top three, but it'll do fine without my vote I imagine.

Aretha's album is just an absolute tour-de-force, every single track is perfect, and she really is the most remarkable singer. Even after hearing these songs 1001 times, the power of her voice still absolutely wows me every time.

The Supremes Sing Motown (alternatively known as The Supremes Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland) is pretty similar in many ways - it feels like a Greatest Hits, such is the strength of the tracks here. Full of songs that you'll know, but they've basically never been sung as well before or since.

I could have picked Nina's High Priestess of Soul just as easily for the third spot, but I think I'm just that little bit more drawn to Nina's bluesier, slower side. It features one of the all time great protest songs (Backlash Blues), plus the definitive version of House of the Rising Sun. Also very good from Nina this year is Silk and Soul, but I'd put it just a bit behind the other two mentioned.

Also excellent this year is; Born Under a Bad Sign by Albert King, for some brilliant electric blues.
Dylan's John Wesley Harding, which features one of my all time favourite Dylan songs, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight.
Desmond Dekker's 007 Shanty Town, which is some great reggae/rocksteady.
The Four Tops Reach Out for these huge pop songs.
Etta James' Call My Name, which sees her move into more classic soul direction, which we'll see again next year.
Richie Haven's Mixed Bag is this really wonderful folksy-soulful record.

Love so much about this post. FUCK yeah in agreement on Sings the Blues. We've definitely talked before about how great that Supremes album is. And love the shoutouts for Mixed Bag (just criminally obscure at this point) and Born Under a Bad Sign

I know my list is long, so I thought I'd highlight a couple I don't think people on here might have heard already?

    Antonio Carlos Jobim - Wave
The most perfect summertime album ever released. Pour some lemonade and put your feet up in the sun.

Duke Ellington - Far East Suite
@George I know you're a sucker for a late career masterpiece. Somehow, some way, America's Mozart dug deep for a massive, sweeping masterwork at 68. It was last with his writing partner Billy Strayhorn before his death.

    Richie Havens - Mixed Bag
I mean...that voice. Undiluted. Pure, uncut stuff.

James Carr - You Got My Mind Messed Up
The best soul album you might not have heard before. A bunch of ap.net guys used to rep this all the time and with good reason. Just gutbucket genius.

Peter, Paul and Mary - Album 1700
If you liked their pure folk, this is them branching out a bit. They expand the instrumentation a bit and it does wonders. It has at least 3 songs I’d say even the most casual PPM fan needs to hear

I haven't been familiar with the Nina album for that long (@cshadows2887 had me listen to it for #MWE this year), but goddamn, it's number one with a bullet for this year. Sad, sexy, entrancing, and so musically bulletproof. It was one of those "I can't believe how good this is!" first listens. Here are my tweets from #MWE about it:

Sgt. Pepper was a daunting album for me for a long time, and definitely not the first Beatles album that really clicked for me. For years, it had the baggage of topping the Rolling Stone 500, which made me feel like I wasn't appreciating it enough. Eventually, that fell away and I came to love it for what it is, which is a super audacious, often game-changing pop album that nonetheless might not crack my top five Beatles!

The Velvet Underground & Nico is just a thrilling listen. It makes me feel like I'm in a movie.

EDIT: I'd almost forgotten the time that @DaydreamNation and I wrote about The Velvet Underground & Nico for the "My Back Pages" feature on AbsolutePunk. Those features were fun. Will have to re-read this tonight to see if either of us had any cringey takes.

Started off my new listens with Piper at the Gates of Dawn by Pink Floyd, which is a really great album title, if nothing else.

Pink Floyd have never really clicked for me - I’ve listened to them fairly sporadically over the past 15 years or so, giving them another try every now and then and nothing really works. I can’t really describe why not, but whenever I finish an album, I never have any desire or motivation to go back for more.

This was similar from a first go through, I can definitely “respect” it more than I specifically enjoyed it, they’re doing a lot of interesting things with production and sound design and things like that, but I didn’t necessarily enjoy it. The more straightforward poppier stuff like Lucifer Sam I found more enjoyable than the more out there proggy stuff like Interstellar Overdrive.

Perhaps they’re just not for me - but I’m sure I’ll give them another go in 6 months time.
