started the new Deus Ex this weekend and I'm really enjoying it. What was with the anger over the microtransactions though? I haven't noticed them at all, are the just for praxis and crafting supplies?

Yeah the currency and upgrades are purchasable which for a lot of people, myself included, is deplorable in a full price release because we don't trust AAA developers to not fuck with the in game progression. The augment your pre order thing was hilarious too. The good news is the game is fucking incredible, just everything around it is gross.

-Jim Sterling goes into this stuff better than I ever could.

Haha yeah I saw the Jimquisition video for it get posted but I haven't gotten to watch it yet. I don't disagree, I guess just for me myself, like I'm going to painstakingly search the world for items and upgrades and sell guns/ammo I pick up and don't need because I'm playing non-lethal, and do all the side quests, so I don't feel like it's affecting me. However I can see the slippery slopedness of it all.

I think honestly I'm more annoyed for the creative team/developers who took the time to balance this game as well as they did, only to have someone come in and give players a way to pay money and subvert it all.

Do I really need to watch Adam ride a train in Deux Ex?

GTA Online is a good example of abhorrent monetization

I didn't play online much, is it just that you can pay for more in-game currency and thus be able to buy more/better stuff?

I didn't even notice it was a thing until I checked out the store the other day. As far as I know it hasn't, nor will it affect my gameplay, because I'll do everything the game has to offer, but it's still a bad practice that leaves a shitty taste in my mouth and it's impossible to know if it did actually affect our gameplay. The problem is the one and only intention of the implementation is to make them money so there's every reason for them to worm it in somehow with some sort of stifled progression.

The whole argument for or against micro transactions is still around? It's not going anywhere anytime soon and you have the choice to use or not. Simple as that.

I'd be fine with a random info splash screen over that, just my preference though.

I was excited the first time because I thought those guys snickering at you were going to start some shit but by like the 4th time I saw it I was like, okay, I'll walk next time.

I really haven't followed this at all. But what's keeping PC players from getting all of this stuff easily through mods or asset spawning? The threat of getting in trouble?

People can criticize a shitty practice.

It's not that simple when it impedes a games vanilla functionality or is integral to the gameplay systems especially when a developer is not clear about the way it works

Ha, that's a good point, I'm curious about that too. I'm just thinking from console players perspective.

Especially when tbe practice comes at a cost to the game itself.

Had little fun with GTA online despite enjoying the game quite a bit thanks to how much grinding you would have to do to get the fun stuff.

yeah, not a fan of the Aug Lives matter thing for one. Just any ____ Lives Matter variation is super reductive to a super important issue, just always leaves a shitty taste in my mouth. This might not be the only thing you're referring to, but I'm still very early in game.

I don't care about micro-transactions so long as they're for inconsequential things like skins or whatever. It only becomes a bummer when you can pay for something to increase your advantage (like COD releasing weapons you buy that are buffed beyond what comes in-game, etc.)

Overall though, I'm not buying them one way or another, so I'm good.

You guys remember cheat codes? That's been largely done away with thanks to micro-transactions as well.
