Few people know this because we only ever sing the first verse. But read the end of the third verse and you’ll see why “The Star-Spangled Banner” is not just a musical atrocity, it’s an intellectual and moral one, too:

No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave....

So when Key penned “No refuge could save the hireling and slave / From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,” he was taking great satisfaction in the death of slaves who’d freed themselves. His perspective may have been affected by the fact he owned several slaves himself.

I applaud the point that Kaepernick is trying to make. The reactions he is receiving shows that he used the right stage to protest, and the thing about the United States of America, that makes us different, is not that we have a 'majority rules' but that we are a Republic, that the Minority is safe, protected from the Tyranny of the majority...the social reaction is anti-American, and the 'pressure' that he is expected to perform and behave like Everyone else is the problem. Whether someone agrees with him or not, being angry, and burning his Jersey, cursing his message...THAT is unpatriotic. How is standing for the national anthem patriotic? Kneeling at mass doesn't make you religious, you do it because everyone else is doing it...good on you Kap (even though I've despised your face since 2010 when you RUINED my broncos perfect season).

So apparently Bernie Sanders has more or less ditched Tim Canova and reneged on his plans to help Canova campaign here in the waning days/hours before the primary election against Debbie Wasserman-Schultz

By far the most disappointed I've ever been in the Sanders camp. So much for vanguarding actual change. Fuck em.

"Making matters worse, online advertising revenue is largely going to Google and Facebook. As they become our primary news sources, these new digital gatekeepers and their algorithms increasingly determine what information society receives.

The newspaper industry, still the primary source for actual journalism, has lost over 40 percent of its news staff since its pre-recession peak in 2007. Its revenues have also been in freefall. Following a particularly bad year in 2015, the Pew Research Center’s State of the News Media report observed that “the industry may be past its point of no return.”

Rushing into the vacuum left by professional journalism are corporate “sponsored content” and billionaire-backed news, giving rise to a pay-to-play “payola society” in which America’s inequalities are increasingly inscribed into its media system. In this media landscape — marred by digital divides and invasive and deceptive forms of advertising — rich people and corporations can say what they want, but nearly everyone else is censored by market forces.

The financial weakness of the fourth estate renders it vulnerable to further capture from commercial and political interests. Despite the industry’s rapid devaluation in recent years, newspapers still hold significant political power, and they’re easy pickings for rich politicos with personal agendas. For example, the wealthy right-winger Sheldon Adelson purchased Nevada’s biggest paper, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, to advance his business and political objectives."

"In the occupation’s first few years, U.S. facilities like Abu Ghraib and Camp Bucca developed a reputation as “jihadi universities” where hard-line extremists indoctrinated and recruited less radical inmates. Analysts have long suspected that Baghdadi took full advantage of his time at Bucca to link up with the jihadis and former Iraqi military officials who would later fill out the Islamic State’s leadership."

“You’re asking the wrong person [what they think of the performance] because I had five uncles who were police officers, two cousins who were – one who died in the line of duty,” he said. “I ran the largest and best police department in the world, the New York City Police Department. And I saved more black lives than any of those people you saw onstage by reducing crime, and particularly homicide, by 75%, of which maybe four or five thousand were African-American young people who are alive today because of the policies I put in effect that weren’t in effect for 35 years.”

He's in no position to be judging anybody considering he ruined multiple marriages by cheating and is being advised by men who have been accused of sexual harassment and domestic abuse.
