And it has kids signing the chorus. This is torturing me.

I'm gonna get weird, but it reminds me of the first bar of the Thomas The Tank Engine theme song. That relation hit me immediately for some reason ha ha.

Tbh the last rapping song I liked was holding on to you lol

It's clear he doesn't like freestyle or anything so his flow is always super unnatural and then insist on putting cringe bars on top of that

Real talk. Holding On To You is one of my favorite songs of all time.

I still think his flow is way better and more natural on songs like “Levitate,” “Neon Gravestones,” and the last two on this record. I like his older style fine, but I would have never considered him a “rapper” where now I think he’s earned the title.

I'm on like, my 10th listen already, but it's mostly been background noise as I'm at work in my office, so can't wait to really sit down with this later with no distractions.

This album has hit me way more than Trench did during its release week

He wonders aloud whether this sense of bouncing back and forth will always be inherent to the band’s journey. “The next record, which I’m writing already, feels like a reaction to ‘Scaled & Icy’,” he says. “It almost feels like there will be a rhythm to our releases, which I hope is a good thing. I hope that our fans and the people who follow us will hang on for the ride, because it might be a bit jarring, but it is truly indicative of who we are as a band.”

I liked Levitate a decent bit, but anytime they go sadcore like in neon gravestones I completely check out haha

Levitate was a great example of him rapping and has my favorite production out of any of their songs, love it.

I figured out what it reminded me of. Good Day by Nappy Roots. I was wrong on the late 90s (probably more like mid-2000s)

I think this band just isn't for me anymore. Vessel was a masterpiece of an album that managed to blend these feelings of dispair with hopeful messaging and underpinned it all with clever lyrics. Blurryface was packed to the brim with catchy hooks and had so much variety while also feeling genuine and earnest.

Trench seemed like a step back to me, getting too lost in their convoluted stories and instrumentally felt way too stripped down, but there were still some good songs.

Scaled & Icy has a really good first 3 songs, and "No Chances" is beautiful, but nothing other than that really sticks out to me. These dark minimalist beats aren't really doing much for me, and the lyrics just bore me. Ever since they dropped the explicitly mental-health related lyrics from their songs, I just don't know how to connect to their songs. I'm glad that Tyler seems happier now, but somehow he can't manage to make that translate in the songs.

For example: "Guns For Hands" from Vessel, a song about teen suicide, somehow feels comforting and cathartic, and the instrumental is absolutely massive.

Fast forward to now and "Formidable" is a straight-up love song, but it just feels joyless, and I can't place why. The instrumental is kinda generic indie-alternative fodder, and the lyrics don't really tell a story.

I'm glad most people here seem to be liking the album, but I don't really feel it and I guess I have to come to grips with the fact that the band I fell in love with is gone.

I have had the opposite experience. Before Trench, I liked a few of their songs but wasn’t really a fan of their albums as a whole.

Trench was the first one I loved as a whole, and this one is shaping up to be that way for me as well.

For me, it was Blurryface that made the band click for me, and even then they weren't really on my radar until that album started picking up steam on the charts. I went back and listened to Vessel, and there are songs that I do identify with on there, just not the level of stuff from Trench. With that said, there's always a skippable track or two.

This new album is something else. I'm amazed that all this music comes out of just those two guys. Loving it so far!

Aside from Good Day and The Outside, I really enjoy this. Opener feels like a parody song or something

Repeating myself, but man do “No Chances” and “Redecorate” completely reframe the whole record. It reminds me of the hard left turn Punisher takes with “I Know the End” where the end gives the rest of the record greater depth and purpose.

Like, I love how “Bounce Man” feels almost like a goodbye where you’re trying to have your last bit of fun before it gets heavy. By itself, it’s a blast. In the context of the record, there’s a layer of sadness to it. TOP just knows how to structure a record.

    Sending my love

Interesting points of view because this album really has some depressing stuff but is still very hopeful IMO. “Saturday” is a huge song and the verses seem to capture exactly what you’re talking about to me - “I just want to know, have you lost your footing too?”, “Life moves slow on the ocean floor / I can’t feel the waves anymore / Did the tide forget to move?” Good Day I also feel is incredibly depressing but incredibly hopeful.

Also, I feel like Trench really does not have the “story” people claim it does. There’s actually very little of the lore within the songs itself, it’s mostly just the external world they created that does that.

It’s hard to believe I’ve been listening to them for 10 years. I found them when Regional at Best came out. I’ve loved all the eras. Vessel was easily my favorite. Those shows were so much fun. The Express Live shows in Columbus were unforgettable.

Blurryface tour I only saw once. Still remember someone asking us how much we spent on our floor tickets. It was around $60. They paid $400 each. That’s when it all changed and they became the massive band they are today. The trench era I got to see three times. Those arena shows were so impressive.

I’m looking forward to the live stream. This may not be my favorite album by them but I’m not disappointed by it. Sometimes I feel like I’ve outgrown ToP and those times in life but this album has brought me right back in.

I still think about those Columbus shows all the time. Truly incredible.

Was also wild to see them play Musica in Akron in front of like, 100 people back in the day.

Anyone else get "Mr. Blue Sky" vibes from "Good Day"??

One of my biggest regrets is not seeing them in Athens my freshman year at OU. They played a free show there. I didn’t know until after it happened. My friends and I would drive up to Columbus every time they played after that.
