Some cool shit out today. Looking forward to that Counting Crows EP, and the Olivia Rodrigo album is fucking great. Sign me up for THAT being the direction that pop music goes in the next five years.

Also looking forward to the new Mat Kearney record, which, based on a pretty stellar string of singles, will be both a strong bounceback from his last album and a great summer album.

I must be old because I do not get Olivia Rodrigo at all. And I’m not opposed to pop at all. I love Taylor, Dua Lipa and others. Olivia had a vocal style I just can’t get into…but maybe I’ll give it another listen since you’re a fan!

See, I really like Olivia because she’s a very clear student of Taylor’s songwriting. I’ve been skeptical of some of the recent breakout pop stars (I don’t get the Billie Eilish thing at all, for instance), but I think Olivia is a smarter lyricist and a better melodist (and singer) than most of what has been on the pop charts lately.

That first song (brutal) is pretty damn punk. Gonna check out the rest to see what I think.

Interesting. Maybe SNL didn’t give me a good idea of what she can do. It was two very different songs. The vocals sounded weird. But maybe in the context of the album the stylistic shifts make sense…!
PS. I also don’t get Billie at all!

There's some definite pop-punk influence here and there.

I often find SNL performances are underwhelming. The live versions of "Driver's License" I've seen definitely don't do that song justice.
