Sorry, one more thing we aren’t taught in school: the First Red Scare. We learn a lot about the Second Red Square and its implications in Hollywood, but the First Red Scare following the Russian Revolution was way more politically meaningful. Full persecution of American leftists, socialists removed from elected office, deportation of “agitators”, and a crackdown of radical unionism. Its impact on not just electoral politics but also the labor movement was immense: instead of radical, international struggle promoted by early communists and anarchists, you wind up with the anti-socialist, white supremacist view of labor organizing developed by creeps like Samuel Gompers, which is still mostly what the labor movement in America has been over the past 100 years. Did as much to shape the future of what would feel politically possible/permissible, and had as far-reaching impacts on everything ranginf from civil rights to the development of the American welfare state to foreign policy as any non-Great Depression event of the first half of the 1900s. Also was where J Edgar Hoover cut his teeth, and propelled him forward onto one of the most evil careers of that century.

The saddest book I've ever read. My girlfriend's grandmother was pretty young when it happened and has some horrifying stories about the whole thing. The Japanese who executed the commands are the most heartless people to ever live.

lol....TBF I assume their point is that those folks at least love the country/believe in what the country should be/stand for, which I suppose counts as "patriotism". They just all have terrible, horrible ideas on what that is and what the government should be doing for people.

It’s probably quite easy to be patriotic and believe in your country when you and everyone you’ve ever cared about has reaped the benefits of it since birth

Yeah, definitely agree with this. It was probably only a couple of years ago that I learned that the US sent over 10,000 soldiers to fight against the Bolsheviks in the Russian Civil War. Like, I previously thought our imperialism was limited to Latin America and the Philippines at this point but, no, we were militarily trying to undermine Russia's revolution

Seriously, can't get enough of this article. Especially fun to see how each state's textbook says that their states slaves were treated better than in the other slave states.

The amount of people in congress who went through their entire childhood education in segregated schools should be the bench mark for them having to retire. If your high school integrated AFTER you left it, you’re done in Congress.

The best part about working from home is that I can pretend I didn't see the "hey do you have a minute to chat about x" meeting requests

As others have pointed out on twitter, the jobs report doesn't make much sense. The service job areas that were apparently the ones having the most trouble hiring did...pretty good.

Plus, being able to take quick siesta's in my bed when I have no meetings going on/nothing urgent to work on, is a huge WFH bonus

The school board election in my distric is getting crazy. The insane Trumpbot lady opposing the union supported candidate claimed on her page that the union's pac donated to their preferred canddiate's campaign, but that is illegal and what really happened was the union purchased mailers to send out to people saying "hey this is who we endorsed". A bunch of people called her out on it so last night she wrote on the union supported candidate's FB page asking her to tell people to stop attacking her lol.

Then today just last hour, somebody caught one of the Trump lady's supporters driving around stealing the campaign signs of the union candidate. They posted a picture on FB of her and her car, and............There's a big ole see-through "Q" decal right smack dab in the middle of the rear windshield. So shes' got Qanon nuts going around stealing yard signs for her.
