So I'm putting together a list of atrocities that have occurred in American history that weren't really taught in schools and I'm gonna read some of the foremost books on each event. I know the list could be as long as this thread, but I'm starting with some obvious ones:

    Sand Creek Massacre
    Tulsa race riots
    Operation Northwood
    Japanese internment camps
    My Lai Massacre
    Radium girls
    Tuskegee Experiment

    Open to more suggestions

Related to these (but maybe separate, if you are looking to focus on events that took place on US soil) are a string of US-backed/CIA-initiated coups and government overthrows all over the globe that led to the deaths of millions of people, specifically in the Global South. Iran, Chile, Guatemala, Indonesia, the Congo, Grenada, all come to mind, and there are plenty more.

Id also add two incidents of the US bombing its own citizens here - the MOVE bombing and the Battle of Blair Mountain (the first bombs that ever fell in the US were dropped by our own government). And of course the persecution/murder of radicals throughout the 20th century, from labor activists to Black Panthers to revolutionaries around the planet. Fred Hampton is a pretty famous case these days, but I also somehow never knew until recently that the US backed the Bolivian forces that executed Che Guevara. Less famously, the State also murdered hundreds - if not thousands - of striking workers and workers trying to form unions during labor disputes in the 1800s and first half of the 1900s.

I think something else I’m learning about through Blowback was how much the US really pushed Cuba towards aligning with the USSR. Castro was not a fellow traveler, dyed in the wool Communist the way Che and Raul were until the US basically made the case for him throughout the 60s. This was probably intentional on some level.

A lot of the Cold War third world proxy wars were over countries in situations like this, where it was less a Marxist revolution and more just a liberal nationalist independence revolution that likely would have gladly accepted the US as allies. But with those revolutions came significant economic reform that helped the country at the expense of first world capitol’s control, like Cuba’s land reform. Which is a big no-no.
