  8. I can never wrap my head around products like these. The materials alone can't be worth that much right? So you're paying only for the brand name? How does a brand eventually have the ability to charge that much when the cost of the goods themselves aren't even that high? Can I just create a shoe company and charge $1,500 a pair and let people buy them purely as a status symbol type of purchase? #confused

Well, everything is marked up higher than the cost of the raw materials. Otherwise, everything would be sold at a loss.

  18. I mean, yeah. I know that. I'm more confused over how some brands can charge $600 for a pair of shoes and actually convince people to buy them when you can get something similar for $50.

I actually read something on the internet recently by a bunch of capitalists who were claiming that the single most detrimental development in modern capitalism was commercialization and obsession with advertisement wherein inferior products outpace and outsell superior products. It's pretty interesting, although I would opine that there have been more macro level policy developments that are worse, but nevertheless.

But, yeah, I agree that it's insane. I don't wear name brand clothes and, honestly, since a fairly young age I've never been inclined to.

Except I think that's like...the opposite of this case. This isn't a detriment to capitalism...it's one of the eventualities of it. It's not an inferior product; it's an expensive one...for rich people to buy. Though there's probably something to be said about not even letting the people destroyed by wealth inequality identify with their lives
